Gildan Reports 4Q Results
, As the firm's fourth-quarter results were in line with our projections. During the quarter, the top line was down only 7.1%, relative to the 19.2% decrease in the previous quarter, as volume declines moderated. Nonetheless, Gildan faced pricing pressure, and we expect this will continue into the near term as other manufacturers compete aggressively to secure order agreements with mass merchants and retailers. Despite stepped-up promotional discounts, the quarterly operating margin improved substantially to 14.4% from 8.6% in the year-ago period, thanks to manufacturing efficiencies, lower cotton prices, and expense-reduction initiatives.
Over the next year, we are optimistic that revenue trends will improve, as the firm has secured new retail programs to expand its socks and underwear categories. Management estimates that these contracts will result in $70 million of incremental sales, representing 7% sales growth in 2010. As a result, operating margins will probably improve in 2010 as the firm gains leverage from spreading fixed manufacturing costs over a larger revenue base.
