Introducing potty to 18 month old, do I keep him in diapers or use cotton training underwear?

I just introduced the potty to my 18 month old yesterday, I am using the potty ring for the big toilet and so far he loves to go sit on the potty and has peed once in it.

Every time I mention potty he runs to the bathroom.

However I don't want to be pushy at all as I know he is young. Should I continue with diapers or switch to the cotton training pants (which I know I will have to wash a lot now.

Anyone with experience starting this early?

I think this depends on how motivated your son is. My son started potty-training at about 19mo. and because he was so motivated and excited to use the potty, I don't think the cotton-underpants motivated him any more than he had been. He wasn't excited about the "big kid pants" (until later) and the mess of the cotton pants didn't bother or motivate him at the time either. Staying in diapers at that time made sense for us, and was much less clean-up for me! Once he started using the potty more reliably, we switched cotton underpants a few months later. By that time, he got more excited about wearing "big boy pants" and there were fewer messes to clean (most days!). Try it with cotton pants for a couple days and then with diaper. If you can see that your son is excited by the "big boy underpants" or motivated to stay dry in them because they get wet and uncomfortable then it may be worth it, because it will help speed up the process. If he doesn't seem to care either way, then I'd stick to the diapers (for your sake!) until he gets more reliable. Good luck!

When you begin toilet training when do you start using the cotton underwear in the plan of things?

Right from the start or after they have sat on the toilet and used it for a few times ?
I will not be using pull ups, diapers will be used at nap time and extended time away.

i tried underwear right from the start and it didn't work but I am pretty sure he just wasn't ready. Pullups never worked either. I was consistent with the underwear and it paid off in the end. A lot of clean up but it was worth it. My 3 year old son only has the occasional accident at night now.

Potty training question- which works better "Pull-Ups" or cotton underwear?

We're working on potty training our 2 year old and not having much success. We've been using Pull-Ups so far. I've got some cotton underpants that are labeled "training pants" (They're pretty thick- have extra lining in the "important places"). What have you had more success with? My 2 year old calls the Pull Ups "diapers", so I'm beginning to wonder if she thinks that she's supposed to go to the bathroom in the Pull-Ups??? Any other advice is welcome, too. Thanks.

Pull ups never worked for us. Same thing.. they thought they were diapers. The underwear on the other hand worked FABULOUSLY!! I would recommend just using those. Good luck

what are the best potty training underwear that are water proof don't leak and are cheap?

training pants that are waterproof, cotton on the inside, and are low in price?
and what store can i find them at?

I use the gerber ones but they do leak at times. you can find them at wal-mart in the baby section. Make sure you get the covers to go over them...like the plastic pant things.

23 Month old Potty Training Issues?

It all started when my daughter started taking her clothes and diaper off in her crib, and peeing in bed. Then she started reaching into her diaper and playing with her poop.
Well, after giving her 3 baths in one day because of her poop playing. I thought it was time to step up the potty training process.

For the last 2 weeks, she was in pull-ups. She treated them just like diapers.

Yesterday I went out and bought cotton training pants (underwear with a little padding). She has peed 3 times in them. The first time she said UH OH, and one time she just walked around being completely wet like she didn't even care she was soaked! I walk her to the potty every hour or so, and she will sit on the big potty for about 5 min. It is hard to get her to sit longer. She has not gone in the potty yet.

About 3 weeks ago, she went pee twice in the potty, and hasn't done anything since.

How many times should it take for her not to like being wet in her pants?
She has a good predictable poop schedule, she will squat, and stop what she is doing. I will keep her in the undies for a couple of days to see if she progresses. I'm guessing if I give her 4-5 days in the underwear and she still doesn't go in the potty, then I will put her back in pull-ups. What do you guys think?

Potty training takes time and lots of patience. Usually positive reinforcement, and a rewards system works best. Never punishing for accidents. All in all, they will pretty much be potty trained when they are ready.

Cotton Training Pants Make Potty Training Easier

There are many reasons to use cotton-training pants when it is time for your child to graduate from diapers, but perhaps the most obvious reason is that it is easier to potty train with cotton training pants.  While some parents choose today’s pull-up training pants that are made by disposable diaper manufacturers, they are often frustrated because it seems to take far to long for their child to move on to being potty trained and no longer needing trainers.

The problem with disposable training pants is that they are so absorbent that a child can’t feel when he or she is wet.  In fact, they quickly learn that they can ignore the urge to go to the bathroom because they remain comfortable even after wetting their pants, and they can wait until it is convenient for them before telling a parent they are wet.
