Fifty-Fifty Women: the double meaning of the poll’s title was deliberate, says Carole Beu, founder and owner-manager of Auckland’s Women’s Bookshop. It was a quest for 50 great books written by women over the past 50 years, or, as Beu puts it, a chance to “get people thinking about all the brilliant things there are left for them to read before they die”. But at the same time it was an old-fashioned consciousness-raising exercise, a reminder that women writers haven’t always been considered equal.
A case in point is that when the Modern Library announced its 100 best novels of the 20th century back in 1998, a whopping nine were by women. (Perhaps not coincidentally, the selection panel consisted of nine blokes, plus AS Byatt.)
