I came to know about this recently from a reputed Socks Manufacturer who has 20 years experience. He says Machine wash reduces the life of elastic of the Socks.
I'm sure he's right and it does - but I really, truly, envy anyone who actually has the time to handwash socks!!! It's that age old debate, time versus money, plus the eternal question of what constitutes quality of life.....

He has had eczema, rashes and "itchies" for years and we've been searching for answers. A week and half ago, his allergy doc did 2 different tests for latex allergy and he was quickly positive for both. Anyhow, his worst areas are wrists, feet, ankles, waist, under the buttocks and then occasionally the backs of the knees, inside the elbows, back, chest and upper body. We did buy him latex free socks at a local Amish store, some Crocs which are croslite and not latex/rubber and shirts with no appliques. I found him boxers with a covered waistband and no elastic on the leg openings, but they are huge on him (size 5/6). He weighs about 35 pounds and wears a size 4 - not a big 4. Defintely not a 5/6. He is rash free since I switched to this underwear (and "commando") but I need normal looking underwear that fits him. I found some weird underwear from Egypt but it's like $10 for a pair. I just want either boxers or briefs that are 100% cotton that aren't cut for bigger boys.
I have a latex allergy as does my mother. What we do is we have to buy underwear that does not have the elastic exposed, which has the rubber that causes that problem. You can try buying underwear for him that has "covered waistbands." I know it's made for adult males, as my ex-hubby only wore this kind (even though he wasn't allergic to latex).

I personally have machine washed all of the above. wool shrink when machine dried, all synthetic fabrics machine dry on low heat, cotton machine dry on high heat, all others machine dry on medium, unless tag says HAND WASH ONLY

Cotton appears to be less allergy producing materials that you can bring your skin. The use of sandals, if possible, and cotton socks, let your feet comfortable and cool and there is no friction on sensitive skin. This can lead to skin rashes, especially if you get your feet warm. It may be a little strange, but hey, at your feet. If your feet are comfortable, then the day will go well. If you are at work, perhaps an office, then wear socks in bright colors can be.
