Why shouldn't you wear cotton socks while running?

I run cross country. I went to a running store and they said that non-cotton socks should be worn while running. They didn't go into the reason why. Will I run better if I wear non-cotton socks/no socks?

If in really warm weather, you can sweat a bunch and cotton socks can possibly cause blisters (mainly if socks are lose). I've usually 95% train in cotton socks and will run races in the dri-fit light ones. Not wearing socks may cause blisters, but you may can get away with it. Go with some low cut dri-fit socks is what I'd recommend. Good Luck

Running socks? Typical cotton socks seem to give me blisters after getting wet....?

Is there a material that socks are made of these days that prevent blisters? What kind of sock brand too. Cotton isn't doing the trick. Problem isn't from the shoes it's from high mileage and sweat, used different pairs that are a half size large.

Well I have a pair of SmartWool running socks, and they work great! If you can't find those, I would trying a local running store and asking them what socks might be good for you. I get all of my socks from a running store near me, and I love them. They work great! The staff should be able to help you find some good ones.

Where in the UK can I get the cheapest decent (thick) white cotton socks from? (Above the ankle) I'm a size 12?

I want decent Quality (not necessarily branded - don't need Nike or Wilson's etc) sports socks (for Badminton, running etc), I think 100% cotton are best (?) so I would problem like to hear answers which are 100% cotton (so nothing cheap from Sports Direct, Sports World).

Thanks

I'm up for buying 3 pairs maybe a few more.

acrylic or polyester socks? (4 running)?

Iused to wear cotton socks, and i run cross country, and i ended up getting blisters, so i bought some socks. I have two kinds of socks, same brand. Both of them say they have "moisture control" but one of them says "pill resistant" and the other says "cushioned". well here's what they are made out of:
"pill resistant" - 84% polyester, 15% stretch nylon, 1% spandex (these ones feel light weight and thin)
"cushioned" - 85% acrylic, 14% stretch nylon, 1% spandex (these ones are thicker)

well i was wondering which one is better for moisture wicking and preventing blisters. they're not really "running" socks, they're like for sports in general. are these good enough or should i buy those socks with cool max and all that stuff? (if you were to pick for the two i have tho tell me which).

The cushioned ones will prevent blister more than the pill resistant but i think that one is better for runner quicker

i need running socks? help?

I didnt know that it was bad to wear cotton socks...and now i have a blister..so i wana buy some good running socks but im not sure what kind to get. which one would prevent blisters more? thick or thin socks? If anyone can suggest me which socks is best for me that would be great. I need one that gets rid of moisture and helps prevent blisters.

I dont get why im getting a blister (besides that fact that i used cotton socks, but i've always used those and i just got blisters now). Im wearing new shoes...is it just because they havent been broken in yet? On my right foot it does feel like the foot slides inside the shoe a bit, and i guess that also contributed to the blister, but my left foot is completely fine though. And i cant really return the shoes anymore cuz i got em pretty dirty, and i dont have money to get new ones....what is wrong with my right shoe??
the shoes has these things on them that prevent me from over pronating (those grey parts in the arch area, dual density crap i think is what they call them) and i get blisters on the arch area of my foot too (only right though)

o and btw i run in cross country, so i need a sock that is good to wear for long period of time
oh and if some1 could tell me how much those socks are, (and how many pairs per buy) that would great!! thanks a lot, sorry for all the questions

DeFeet makes great running socks and wicks sweat away, so it helps reduce blistering. Go to any running store and they often carry better socks for running than boxed stores.
Other brands such as Wigwam, Ininji, NIke, Asics...they are good too. If yout right foot slides when you run, try lacing them up in a different pattern (I will provide the link below).
You can use Body Glide for blister prevention as well - also used for chafing under your clothes.

My running is going well so far.  I haven't felt any soreness or anything, even after my long 8 mile run Saturday.  I think running about every other day or so has helped to give me good recoup time.  I ran about 5 miles (no Garmin so not sure on the exact distance) on Monday night after work by myself since Jen had dinner plans that night.  This was one of those runs that felt pretty forced for the first mile or two until I reached a comfortable place somewhere in the 2-3 mile range.  Sometimes I get out there and feel great from the minute my feet hit the pavement and sometimes it's a real concerted effort to get there.  This was one of those nights.  Anyway,...
