A runner's Christmas list for non-runners

This column is for non-runners who have a dedicated runner on their Christmas list. It's my opportunity to play Santa's agent and assist you, the non-runner who thinks we're all a bit crazy, in selecting a gift your running loved one would like to see under the tree or in their stocking.

Let's start with a couple of items on the "do not buy" list; like a new pair of running shoes for example. Runners are somewhat obsessed when it comes to what they put on their feet. They know what they like and what they don't like and will spend hours in search of the ultimate running shoe and your attempt to intercede in this process is tantamount to trying to fix someone up with a blind date. The same criteria applies to energy bars and drinks. Runners are very fussy about what they'll eat and drink when they're training and want to arrange their own concoctions. Let it go, or play it safe and give him or her a gift certificate for a pair of shoes, or give them one of those fuel belts that are like a portable wet bar for gel packs and energy drinks — or let Santa's agent help.
