I am 23 and trying to learn how to sew, my first project was a blanket for my daughter. That was pretty simple. My next project is a tree skirt, I was going to have my aunt help because she knew how to sew very well until she died very recently. Now I am stuck I do not have a pattern or anything. I do not know where to begin. I already have my fabric it is just a thin cotton fabric and I got a felt backing for it (the lady at wal-mart helped me) I just do not know how to cut it or how do make it. Please help.
Well, it's really just a big circle. You can make a pattern yourself with leftover newspaper. Think of it as a big pie cut into pieces. It all depends on the size of your Christmas tree, but it is so easy to make that you really don't even need a pattern.
Remember, a big circle, with pieces like a pie. Sew the top and bottom separate, then sew them together inside out. Leave a little hole to turn it outside-in and sew the little hole up and you're done!
Hope I helped! Good Luck!!!

I want to knit my 6yo daughter some light cotton nightgowns for spring but I can't find any patterns. I'm looking for a simple pattern with a plain bodice and a full/swing skirt. I'd like to add my own embellishments like lace edging on the shoulder straps. But I need a plain pattern to start with. Thanks!
That's a lot of knitting, but here is a link. Good luck.
I have15 quilt blocks that were handsewn by my grandmother, probably in the 1950s, the pattern is a lady with a long full skirt, and a big bonnet. All done with various cotton fabrics from dresses from my sister and myself. Very colorful.
If you're asking for the name of the block, it's probably a Sunbonnet Sue... that applique pattern was and is a popular one.
(BTW, Sunbonnet Sue is a young girl... Victorian Ladies are grown women. If you want to see images of both, you'll have to do the following since YahooAnswers is having a problem with links just now:
...go to google.com
...click on Images in the upper left
...enter Sunbonnet Sue in the search window
...click Search
for Victorian Ladies, do the same but put this (complete with quote marks) in the search box instead:
'"Victorian Ladies" quilt block
(then click Search Images, or just Search, depending on which page you're on)

I'm not good at matching. I recently bought a black knee length cotton skirt. It has black lacy pattern on the front. I am trying to find a white or black shirt to go with it for a nice dinner. (Not too nice, just suit and tie kind of dinner). My question is...what kind of shirt do I try to find to go with it? Do I want a long sleeve white silky button down shirt? Do I want a black short sleeve sweater type shirt? Do I want a t-shirt type shirt like from the Gap?
I would get a nice white or black V-neck silk top, and a red, black or white cropped blazer. Depending on the blazer, you don't need a fancy shirt underneath and if you get a nice shirt (like in the example) you don't need a blazer. Definitely not a t-shirt from the Gap though.

Kathi Garnett: My Raincoat Is Almost Finished!!
Usually my sewing projects are unplanned. I buy fabric I like when it is on sale. If I think the fabric will become a skirt that comes to the knee, I get a 1 1/2 yards; if I think the fabric will become a pair of pants, I get 2 or 2 1/2 yards depending upon the width; if the fabric is knit and will become a shirt, I buy 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 yards; and so on. I bring this fabric home and put it in my "stash" as it is lovingly called by those of us who sew. Eventually I will see a pattern that is perfect for the fabric and start sewing. This raincoat is an exception. I saw the fabric, a laminated cotton by Amy Butler , and immediately knew I wanted to make a raincoat. ...
