Are organic cotton sheets necessary for living without chemicals in my sheets.?
21/365 jan 21

I am reading the book Green Chic. The author talks about a number of chemicals used to treat sheets prior to packaging. She recommends using organic sheets only. She swears you can't wash the chemicals out of the sheets.

I hate being sold fear. And I don't have the money to go change all my sheets over to organic (or listen to most of the advice she gives).

Do you think organic cotton is safer? Is there a way to wash traditional cotton sheets to get the chemicals out?

organic cotton is safer but the chemicals do eventually wash out/off gas so if you have sheets that are several years old they are probably free of chemicals by now. What you should plan on doing is replacing your sheets slowly with organic cotton sheets over time and hit sales to do so.

Is it necessary to buy organic cotton sheets for a baby cot?
always

Hi We have recently invested in organic mattresses for our two babies as we believe that the chemicals in normal mattresses maybe harmful to our babies. However, do we now need to buy organic cotton sheets or would the chemicals and pesticides in these sheets be washed out in a normal washing machine?

I would stick with the organic.

I really love my bedsheets and I don't want to throw them out. They just match perfectly with my room.

Why are organic cotton sheets so rough? How can I get them softer?
window room view

I bought organic cotton sheets and ugh! They are rough and scratchy, not soft at all. Same thing for organic cotton napkings, like sandpaper against my lips! :( I am very disappointed. I bought knits and a terry robe in organic cotton and they are the softest. But woven cotton is soooo unbearably rough and itchy against the skin. Does anyone know why that is?

Also can you please tell me how to get it to soften up? I have heard about enzyme wash but I don't know what that is or how to do it at home. Google was no help! :-/

Do you think if I buy digestive enzyme cellulase and put a few caps (how many??) in the wash it will 'eat up' the roughness, since cellulase digests fiber? Should I put any of my natural soap or just the cellulase?

PLEASE: Don't tell me fabric softener or dryer sheets, I have chemical allergies and can't use any of that commercial stuff and why I bought the organic cotton sheets in the 1st place, they were supposed to help me out. Thanks.

Organic cotton isn't treated and cotton is not a soft material when woven, usually repeated washing will soften the cotton, vinegar can also soften it if you soak it in a strong solution for about 2 hours before you wash it. I've never tried and enzyme solution since I'm allergic to everything to do with laundry, and afraid that will cause hives too. Good luck.

  • Now is the time to assess yearly crop from edible garden

By fall, the First Family's plot had yielded 740 pounds of produce, some of which ended up at family dinners for the Obamas or at official functions like the state dinner for the Prime Minister of India Tuesday. Not a bad return on the $180 investment in seeds, plants and other necessities the White House reports spending.

With the main growing season behind us, it's a perfect time for veteran and novice gardeners to take stock of what worked, what didn't and what needs to be done now for successful veggie gardens in 2010.

"With all the money I've spent on gardening, I could buy vegetables at

Kroger for 10 years," said Jack Corbin, who found himself purchasing big-ticket items for his growing hobby, including a tiller, a greenhouse for seed starting and supplies for canning. "But I enjoy the work and getting out there with long-time gardeners."
