Packaging Fashion: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly | Green by Design
Sustainability in fashion encompasses a lot of things. It’s not just about using the greenest materials to make your product. The product is actually a tiny fraction of the business – who cares if you’re using organic cotton if your production is sloppy and you generate a lot of unnecessary waste? Or if you pack each shirt in an individual box? Packaging is one key aspect that is often overlooked when it comes to evaluating how green a business is, but that’s where a lot of waste occurs.
I remember to this day a presentation we had in elementary school where we all pulled out our sack lunches and the teacher had us put all the food in one pile and all the packaging/napkins/etc. in another pile. My sandwich and apple looked tiny and insignificant next to the mountain of plastic baggies and shiny cardboard towering over them. When I worked in retail, we would get shipments where every single garment was swaddled in a plastic bag and tissue paper and came with a hanger. Once everything was unpacked, our dumpster was overflowing!
