Do you need to "enzyme wash" organic cotton to make it softer? Why is it so rough?
Blanket

I just bought a few organic cotton items and they're all very rough and scratchy to the touch. I got some bedsheets & napkins. The handkerchief is flannel and very soft and so is the tank top. But all woven cotton ended up really UGH! The napkin is rough on my raw lips it hurts. (My lips are chapped and peel so...)

What do I need to do without chemicals to make the cotton soft? (I can't use regular detergent, I have severe chemical sensitivities, it's awful!) --NO FABRIC SOFTENER, PLEASE-- Sorry for caps, that stuff makes me vomit, I kid you not, I can't be near that I might as well live with rought & scratchy.

What is enzyme wash? Do I just open a digestive enzymes capsule and add it to some water and launder like that? Will the enzymes "eat up" or digest the rough stuff?

Or will the cotton naturally soften after several washes? I use Dr. Bronner's soap to do my laundry due that I can't use even 7th Generation detergent is loaded with toxic chemicals, UGH!

Thanks for any suggestions! :0)

try using vinegar in the rinse water. and it will soften the more it's washed.

Sheets for a newborn - what type?
Blanket

Hello! We're due in December, and live in Minnesota, so it will be a COLD December. It's our first, and we're a bit overwhelmed - in a good way!

We're just now getting registered for everything, but we're a bit confused about what type of sheets to get.

There are cotton/organic/flannel/jersey blends... is there a type of sheet that is better than others for newborns? Anything we should stay away from?

Thanks in advance!

Just get the regular type sheets. The baby will already be in a sleeper and probably be swaddled in a blanket. You don't need to worry about the sheets. Whatever you get will be fine. You probably don't want the flannel ones or anything that keeps the baby too warm. Both of my children hated being hot especially in the winter. They were in a normal swaddle receiving blanket in their sleeper and that was good enough for them. You don't want to over heat the baby. Go for the cheap ones! Good luck and Congrats!

  • Home Sweet Hometown: Dallas, Texas

It was too nice of a day for my childhood to die. The Dallas humidity had flown south for the weekend, and for once, my hair obeyed my hours of flat-iron instruction. After receiving an A- on my English paper dedicated to the merits of the em dash, I decided to treat myself to a Jamba Juice in celebration of my consummate bullshitting.

The Starburst-colored walls and a poster of an overzealous strawberry greeted me as I walked into the shop. The employees smiled, and I reciprocated with a cheery “good afternoon!” Per usual in my neighborhood, I stood in line behind a veritable cougar, clad in the standard Juicy tracksuit uniform, busily ordering her 16-oz Caribbean Passion. As she reached for her wallet to retrieve her AmEx, she dropped her Chanel clutch. Normally, this would be no obstacle to my perfect day, but her fumble revealed a small handgun in the inner pocket of her purse. For a few seconds, I just stood there, waiting for her to grab the weapon and start the first Jamba hold-up of all time. But instead of ransacking the place for all its organic fruits and wheatgrass, the woman simply said, “Oops!”, retrieved her death weapon and coyly slid it back into her bag. The employee just laughed and said, “Oh no worries! This is Texas, after all. Mine is at home.” This is Texas. Exactly.

Organic Coats, Vegan And So Warm – Sew Your Own

How happy I am to have met my major sewing goal of 2009 – sewing 2 warm, organic winter coats for my husband and myself. This was a big project, but not beyond the capabilities of anyone who knows how to use a sewing machine. Coats are one of those items of clothing you may assume you just have to buy ready-made, but when you’re stuck with that belief, your chances of finding an organic coat are pretty limited. If cruelty-free is also on your garment checklist, your choices for store-bought winter coats are even slimmer. By deciding to sew your own organic men’s or women’s coat, you’ve taken the power of choice and ability back into your own hands, and I hope this latest article in the Reskills column of VeganReader will help to inspire you to take total charge of your winter wardrobe!
