Is it OK to machine wash Blue Sky Organic Cotton yarn?
Blue & White Chef's Towel

I'm making a baby blanket for a friend's mother, and so I want to be sure that she can machine-wash the blanket easily. The label on the hank said to hand-wash, but various sites that sell the yarn said machine-wash is fine. Is it fine to machine wash it, or how badly will machine washing damage the yarn?

The biggest problem is probably going to be shrinking. If this were clothing, that would be a big issue, but for a blanket, it should be alright.

It's very important to note that when you give handmade gifts to a baby or child, they're going to need frequent washings. I'd select a yarn designed for baby projects for that reason. Most are acrylic, probably for their washability.

Where to open a baby registry for organic products?
Neutral Scarves

We are expecting a child in December 2009 (we don't know gender yet) and have started a registry at Babies-R-Us, but cannot find many products: wool/alpaca blankets, cotton plush blankets, modern looking cotton nursery bedding, organic toys, foam mattress, light-weight crib in cherry color (there is one in maple color at Babies-R-Us though) ...
Does it mean that we should open a registry at another store instead? What other national store chain would be good for a variety of organic/quality baby products?

Do you have a buy buy baby near you? They have a bit higher end things, and many organic products.

What yarn can i use in place of "Lion Brand Nature's Choice Organic Cotton" ?
Green & White Cotton Rag Bag

Hello, knitting pros- Another quick question for you all- Im trying to follow a pattern for a baby cardigan and want to use a different yarn from the one thats mentioned in the pattern- "Lion Brand Nature's Choice Organic Cotton". Im in the process of making a blanket with this yarn already and now want to experiment with other yarns. What can I use in its place- Im a complete novice, so I would appreciate brand names. Thanks again!!
Thanks everyone! Unfortunately, I went and bought yarn that not only doesnt have the same gauge as the pattern mentions but shrinks in the wash as well :( .. Needless to say I didnt read the replies to my question... oh well, a lesson learnt(the hard way!)

You can interchange this yarn with another worsted weight yarn, but stay away from Lion's Kitchen Cotton, it is a bit hard for baby clothes. Lamb's Pride's Cotton Fleece is a nice one if you want to stay with cottons. That said, it's now time for you to learn to read a ball band <G> for this purpose. Look at the number of stitches per inch and the recommended needle size. Any other yarn that will match that number of stitches (or a half stitch smaller or larger with different sized needles in the same area--7 to 9 US) will probably work. In this case, the ball band (or hang tag) will most likely tell you it is a worsted weight yarn. If you want to stay away from acrylics (acryllicks to me, I prefer natural fibers) and want a wool, look for one that indicates it is a Superwash. These yarns can be safely washed in the machine, and while they can go into the dryer, really should be dried in the air on a flat surface (you don't want to see some of my socks <G>. Cascade 220 has a superwash version that is quite affordable, and Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted is absolutely beautiful superwash merino, though more expensive. If you really want a fairly decent acrylic, though, look for Patons Canadiana or Plymouth Encore. Those are about the only two I'll work with occasionally.

How to dye organic cotton fabric with copper to achieve greens?

I'd like to dye some organic woven cotton fabric to achieve shades of seafoam green and pastel green (aka baby blanket mint green) ,.

Any clue on how to achieve this? I was cleaning out my copper wand with a white cotton cloth and it turned blue-green. So it's gotta be possible.

No chemicals please: unfortunately I'm deathly allergic to that. =(

Thanks for your input with links if possible.

um -- you can't possibly do this without chemicals! Copper is a chemical, and you need to oxidize it to make the copper turn a green, so you can't avoid it. The whole world is made of chemicals.. even you are .. so I don't understand a remark like "I'm deathly allergic" to chemicals. That's just oxymoronic.

But look here how to get the cupric liquid for the dye: http://danceswithwool.wordpress.com/2008 /06/02/wool-dyeing-copper-penny-blue/ but these directions are for wool. Wool is a protein fibre, while cotton is plant material. It is possible to use it on cotton and linen, but it requires the use of more chemicals. See http://www.geocities.com/anne_liese_w/Dy eing/dyemordants.htm (part way down the page), but you can't make it from plain copper. You can try the ammonia-copper mixture and see if it works on cotton. Try a small piece of fabric first to see what result you get.

Where can I buy organic cotton in color mint green?

I've googled for hours at a time and getting nowhere. I'm looking for either woven fabric by the yard in a pastel green aka mint green (aka "baby blanket" green) or any women's clothing already made in color mint green. (preferably tops but anything really at this point).

I'd also consider the shade known as dusty green aka seafoam green.
NO blue, please. (A lot of daltonians out there invariably wear brown and blue these past few decades on St Patrick's Day and try to pass it as green!) ;o)

Any help greatly appreciated. I've tried all the google links I could find. I know it's gotta be out there somewhere. Heck I might even consider knit by the yard, even though I'm looking for organic cotton which is woven and not jersey/knit. Thanks!
Just wanted to add: I'm VERY chemically sensitive, just in case anyone was about to suggest dyes or chemicals on the fabric. that's why it's ORGANIC cotton. Thank you :o)
