Organic Cotton Baby Mattress

Hi We have recently invested in organic mattresses for our two babies as we believe that the chemicals in normal mattresses maybe harmful to our babies. However, do we now need to buy organic cotton sheets or would the chemicals and pesticides in these sheets be washed out in a normal washing machine?

I would stick with the organic.

We are expecting a child in December 2009 (we don't know gender yet) and have started a registry at Babies-R-Us, but cannot find many products: wool/alpaca blankets, cotton plush blankets, modern looking cotton nursery bedding, organic toys, foam mattress, light-weight crib in cherry color (there is one in maple color at Babies-R-Us though) ...
Does it mean that we should open a registry at another store instead? What other national store chain would be good for a variety of organic/quality baby products?

Do you have a buy buy baby near you? They have a bit higher end things, and many organic products.

I registered for the "Nature's Purest-Hug Me" playard from Babies R Us because it was labelled as organic and healthier. Well okay, the fabrics are organic cotton but the playard mattress is still smelly vinyl plastic! I set it up last Friday and now, almost 4 days later, it still stinks. I'm trying to avoid baby products that outgas right down to the mattress and now we are left with this thing.

I dont know if I can afford to replace it now but if anyone knows of an organic playard mattress (cotton, wool, rubber, etc) that I can replace it with, it would be great. But for now, how do I clean it? Is there something I can put on it to remove the smell? No bleach or lysol or more chemicals please.

I agree with the vinegar and water; you also might put the mattress outside to let it really air out. Then cover the mattress with a mattress pad if this is possible and then the baby sheet or something that the baby won't roll up in. lemon juice water might work too.

Why dont you put the mattress outside for several days to ventilate... the smell will eventually dissipate with all the outside air... If you are still unhappy... How about cut a piece of plywood or thin fiberboard (sold at most home improvement stores) to fit the inside of the playpen and then cover it with cotton batting and then a playyard sheet over the top. Or if you are really crafty, you can take an old baby comforter and sew some elastic to the edges using a sewing machine... then place this over the fiberboard to make a soft cushiony area for baby.
