today my sister (whose pregnant) and i were watching tv and saw organic diapers. i looked online and i still dont understand how they work. it seems like they're made of cotton but how does that prevent leaks? do you use organic diapers/baby things for your baby? how is it working for you?
i dont know about organic diapers but i have been exclusivly cloth diapering my daughter since birth...she is now five months old and i will never, never go back to disposables...
my cloth diapers save me money, trips to the store, and my baby girl is not being exposed to all of those chemicals that are in disposables these days...not to mention that im doing my part for the amount of diapers that wind up in landfill on a daily basis...
i use pocket, one-size diapers...Baby Kangas or BumGenius 3.0s and i love them more than i can say. gone are the days of folding, pins and plastic pants...they are just as easy to put on and take off as disposables. not to mention that she is yet to have any kind of rash or irritation unlike my now four year old who was constantly breaking out (not due to her not being changed very regularly)...
check out www.wildflowerdiapers.com and www.twolittlewhales.com for all information on cloth diapering...i love that im saving a fortune...ive pretty much broken even now and my daughter is five months old...

I was reading the What To Expect the first year, and it said you should use cotton balls instead of wipes on a newborn. I'm all for having a healthy baby, and not using harsh chemicals on my baby (like organic cottons and chlorine free and organic diapers, etc) but cotton balls sound ridiculous to me. It seems like it would take forever and be a big mess if you tried to change a messy diaper like that. Moms, what's your opinion on this?
It is perfectly safe, people have been using wipes for many years now on newborns, use ones for sensitive skin if you are concerned.

I read something a while ago about letting diapers air out of the package so the fragrance goes away and the chlorine releases before you use them. I bought a package of dye free organic cotton diapers and they are super expensive. I dont like the fragrance b/c it always gives me a headache when I open the pack so I can imagine what it does to the baby.
So have you heard anything about airing them out first?
i've thought about cloth diapers but I dont think it would work for us, my hubby is deployed and I dont even have time to sleep as it is,lol
The 365 ones from Whole foods are the ones I tried but they are ALWAYS out of our size.
do you have any links for those cornbased one? Thanks
I have never heard this but I suppose it makes sense.
They make disposable diapers that are chlorine-free if you want to use a disposable w/o chlorine, I believe they are corn based (the ones I'm trying right now are anyway). Not sure they are all that much better but every little bit helps, I suppose. The price is equivalent to Huggies or Pampers.
ETA: I sure don't but I will look (when I get home) to see what they are called and try to find a link. I know they are called Natural (something?). I bought them at HEB in Texas. I will try to remember to edit this tomorrow.
.......... I wasn't able to find a direct link in English (here's their site though: http://www.absormex.com.mx/). They may be sold under different names but the manufacturer is Absormex (S.A., Monterrey, Mexico).
Here's a neat site that I did come across: http://www.disposablediaper.net/default. asp
I know fabrics like Microfleece, polyester and Suedecloth work best for keeping baby dry, but I'm afraid they might be processed with a lot of chemicals (can't find anything about it online). So how about Organic cotton or hemp or bamboo....anyone know how well those kinds of diapers work. I know cotton stays wet against baby's skin, and I'm afraid to use it for overnight.
Any eco-friendly and baby friendly suggestions on good brands?
Hello there, I've been cloth diapering my baby from day one and I've got some good insight for you!
Firstly, bamboo, hemp, and even wool are fabulous for cloth diapering! Basically, what I did was I purchased 24 organic cotton infant, or size small prefolds, and then I have 48 organic cotton premium or large sized prefolds. I use a wool covers at night and organic cotton covers for during the day. When my baby grew out of the infant prefolds, I started folding them in three length wise and laying them inside the large prefolds for night time. It works brilliantly, I've never had a problem with it. If your baby is a heavy wetter, you could put a organic fleece insert (or you could purchase organic fleece yourself and cut it into strips that are diaper length...much cheaper!) on the inside of their diaper to wick wetness. Although, honest-to-goodness, my little girl pees to the moon and back at night and between the prefolds and wool covers we've never had a leak. Alternatively, if you don't want to use prefolds the hemp and bamboo, and even polar fleece diapers are amazing. I have a couple that I received as gifts and they've always worked better than the synthetic fabrics.
Here's a link that will lead you to an organic cotton cover:

Here's a link that will lead you to a great website about cloth diapering--also about wool covers and bamboo and hemp: http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/cove rs.htm#imsewool
There are SO many options out there. I found this website to be extremely helpful when getting views on cloth diapering products: http://www.diaperpin.com/diapers/diaperp ages.asp
I strongly suggest finding a cloth diapering store near you or otherwise and calling them. The ladies that work there will always have the best insight. They get input from their customers every day and can give you a winning combination.
Personally, the prefolds have worked wonders for me. I can't complain at all. I won't lie though, the organic all in ones are fabulous too!
Good luck, I hope you find a balance that works for both you and your baby. If you have any questions feel free to email me!
*Edit* By the way, it IS possible to get Organic Bamboo and Cotton Fleece fabric. You don't have to buy polyester fleece: http://www.bamboofabricstore.com/index.p hp?main_page=product_info&products_i d=4

With so many expenses that you have to worry about, we could all use a little help. Busy moms, and moms who have to work within budgets, know just how much something free helps. It is not just the money issue either; everyone loves to get free stuff . Even people worth billions of dollars love getting their free goody bags at their big fancy parties. Getting free stuff through the mail for your baby is like Christmas.
So what kind of free stuff can a mother get? Well, for starters, how about some free formula? Yes, I said free formula. There are many formula companies that would love for you to become their newest customer. So to win you over, they will send you a few free cans of formula or some coupons for the formula at the grocery store. Since the average can of formula is around ten to fifteen dollars, this is one nice free gift.
