Are organic cotton sheets necessary for living without chemicals in my sheets.?
Sandwich wrap

I am reading the book Green Chic. The author talks about a number of chemicals used to treat sheets prior to packaging. She recommends using organic sheets only. She swears you can't wash the chemicals out of the sheets.

I hate being sold fear. And I don't have the money to go change all my sheets over to organic (or listen to most of the advice she gives).

Do you think organic cotton is safer? Is there a way to wash traditional cotton sheets to get the chemicals out?

organic cotton is safer but the chemicals do eventually wash out/off gas so if you have sheets that are several years old they are probably free of chemicals by now. What you should plan on doing is replacing your sheets slowly with organic cotton sheets over time and hit sales to do so.

Can you distinguish regular cotton from organic cotton?

Do they look and feel the same? can you tell if the dyes are all natural and organic? And what kinds of recyclable materials can be used for fabrics?

You can't tell organically-raised cotton from factory farm cotton with your senses. Most of the impact from chemical-based factory farming is to the soil and local environment, not the plants raised, so you're going to have to rely on the certification or check the farm. Dyes can maybe be recognized by someone skilled in the tech, but here again you need to rely on certification or a factory check. Just about any organic fiber or recyclable plastic can be made into fabric, from there you pick based on what you want the fabric to do.

The biggest problem with organic cotton is that it has to be hand picked.

I did this as a child and it is not the easiest thing to do.

60 years ago all cotton was picked by hand.

  • Organic & Fair-trade Cotton Export Ban | EcoSalon

You don’t have to be an economist to want to understand the economics of “the fabric of our lives.” Case in point: The recent ban on cotton exports by the Indian government has piqued my curiosity. I wanted to understand whether this ban would have an impact not only on the cotton farmers, particularly those growing organic and fair-trade cotton, but also what impact it might have on us as consumers.

What I learned is that there are no clear answers.

Fact: the price of cotton is at a 15-year high.

Why? According to Eco Textile News , this is the result of Indian authorities lowering cotton export tax rebates. With higher rebates there is more incentive to export raw cotton. Once you lower those tax rebates, you are effectively lowering its export appeal. Supply goes down, but demand is up (marginally), and the price of cotton rises.
