Bamboo Organic Cotton

I've been trying to be earth friendly....organic cotton and bamboo cloth are suppose to be earth friendly...but what about the carbon footprint I am creating by having these items shipped to me? Neither one is considered to be "local" products in my area. What's you thoughts?

i think you just have to be practical about it, way the negatives and positives for everything you buy and determine if its a necessity or a luxury that you can live without

Speaking in terms of clothing and towels specifically. I have been able to find some towels that are 60% bamboo and 40% standard cotton. But I would of course prefer to buy something that is 100% organic. But I know that bamboo is an excellent resource as well.
So what's better in terms of being sustainable?

Both are good materials for sustainability so I would determine this by which has had to be transported less. BUY LOCAL, you can have a product that is very eco friendly but if you put it in a truck, plane, boat and ship it around the globe twice it stops being eco friendly. Look at where you are and look at where the products have to travel and buy the one less traveled.

When I was in Hong Kong about ten years ago, a Chinese environmentalist told me that huge ancient bamboo groves were being chopped down, the same way we were/are chopping down ancient tree forests here. He was talking about the destruction from disposable chopsticks, because the new bamboo accessories weren't widely made yet, but I assume the same problem would be present with the accessories. I know that bamboo is being touted as a "renewable resource", but so is ancient Redwood if you wait long enough. Has no one else been talking about this? What's the scoop?

Be aware that most bamboo fabrics are not made directly from the plant, but from regenerated bamboo which is closer to rayon than to cotton. The comparison to rayon would be a good one from the environmental standpoint.
