I am reading the book Green Chic. The author talks about a number of chemicals used to treat sheets prior to packaging. She recommends using organic sheets only. She swears you can't wash the chemicals out of the sheets.
I hate being sold fear. And I don't have the money to go change all my sheets over to organic (or listen to most of the advice she gives).
Do you think organic cotton is safer? Is there a way to wash traditional cotton sheets to get the chemicals out?
organic cotton is safer but the chemicals do eventually wash out/off gas so if you have sheets that are several years old they are probably free of chemicals by now. What you should plan on doing is replacing your sheets slowly with organic cotton sheets over time and hit sales to do so.

i bought a shirt out of organic cotton and it got me thinking.
(I believe) 50% of the worlds pesticides goes into cotton. 1/3 pound of pesticides is used for every pound of cotton. This is extremely bad for the enviroment. Organic textiles also contain all natural/organic dyes, to which the chemical dyes some people maybe allergic to.
It takes about 1/3 of a pound of pesticides to produce 1 cotton t-shirt. Around 180 -250 pounds of chemical fertilizer is used on 1 acre of cotton in the U.S., most of which washes off and ends up in the water supply or habitat.
Do you think it's time we "go organic" with respect to buying clothes?
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I didn't have all the info.. but the source link below does! Yes, I think it IS time! Thanks!

Don't toss old clothes: Transform them
When it comes to the green movement, environmentally savvy consumers love organic cotton and sustainable practices for producing eco-friendly clothing and accessories. However, they seem to have forgotten something: those T-shirts living a lonely existence in the back of their closets.
The average American throws away 68 pounds of textiles a year – something which Justina and Faith Blakeney would like to prevent.
These sisters are the founders of Compai, a fashion line that features vintage and older clothes that are remade into new things. They have become so successful that they have published multiple books on how to transform old T-shirts, denim and more.
Their latest book, "Refashioned Bags: Upcycle Anything Into High-Style Handbags," creates chic yet unique handbags out of the unlikeliest materials, such as broken umbrellas and plastic grocery bags.
