If you're also looking for pesticide and herbicide-free cotton, you've got a long search. And it won't be cheap.
Cotton is a very demanding crop to grow. It's vulnerable to various pests and diseases, and it takes a lot of nutrients out of the soil. Growing cotton takes a lot of energy, so the carbon footprint is usually heavy.

sometimes i see a shirt that will say [on the tag] 100% cotton and on some others it will say certified organic cotton [also 100%]
course the difference is one will have it officially on there and the other won't. why is this.. ? what makes the regular 100% cotton not organic
organic cotton is grown without using chemical insecticides, chemical fungicides or chemical herbicides. organic cotton cannot be grown from genetically modified seeds.
Conventionally grown cotton (not organic) is usually grown from GMO seed, uses a lot of toxic pesticides and fertilizers (more than about any other crop-cotton is very toxic).
In order to be certified organic and to use the term on labels the crop must be grown and processed in accordance with the USDA organic standards http;//www.ams.usda.gov/nop. Organic farmers and processors jump through a lot of regulatory hoops and pay a lot of money to have the legal right to use the term organic in their marketing.

or is it soft?
If you don't find sheep's wool itchy then specify please. I recently got some 100% certified organic sheep wool and it is itchy as hell too.
I also find cashmere a tactile nightmare: when I touch cashmere for a 1/156th of a second, my hand will itch for minutes afterwards and I get the heebee-jeebees real bad. My nightmare is getting a hug from someone wearing cashmere. OMFG!!!! It happened to me once! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!
Cashmere is to my sense of touch what fingers on a black board are to the sense of hearing. Gross and disgusting and "please make it stop NOW!" type of yuk/gross feeling.
But I digressed! :) So considering all this, do you think alpaca would itch me? (I can only wear cotton, silk and non-treated viscose & rayon, the rest is pretty much out but I haven't tried bamboo or hemp although the latter looks rough and scratchy worse than a potato sack!) :D JMCO!
Thanks in advance for your input.
Oh, thank you so much for the info. I thought I was weird since I was a kid I was allergic to tons of fabrics and my mom forced me to wear them & I would cry. Now I find out it's part of MCS, this chemical sensitivity illness that I got and it's gotten worse thru the years.
Anyway thanks so much but I wanted cool Peruvian clothes with llama designs on them :)
And again, I find cashmere not soft but creepy and itchier than a sweater made of itching powder.

New Zealand, eh? The last resort with clean air & pure water on the planet! :) I should move there!
Clickety, it says Orlon is acrylic and I'm allergic to acrylic :-/ but thanks anyways I appreciate your help! :)
Hi there, we breed alpacas in New Zealand.
Alpaca fleece does NOT have the prickle factor may people associate with sheep's wool. This is because alpaca fibre does NOT have any lanolin or other oils which cause the itchiness. Alpaca fleece is hypoallergenic, lighter, warmer and stronger than other wool. Also alpaca fleece is generally much finer (softer) than sheep's wool meaning the scales of the fibres are less prominent so they are not felt when worn against the skin.
I would advise you not to purchase alpaca garments imported from Peru/Chile/Bolivia etc as the fleece is not such high quality of garments made in NZ, Australia, UK and USA from local farms.
