Gray Cotton Dress

I had a black cotton dress that I tried to take the color out of with RIT dye remover. It took it to gray. Could I still dye that green?

try washing it with the dye remover one more time or some bleach to see if you can get it anylighter. then try the green dye.

Put a mixture of oxyclean and hot water in a bowl and put just the cuffs in the bowl. Let soak for 6-8 hours. The oxyclean will help brighten the cuffs but should have no effect on the colored sleeves if the water seeps onto them. One way to minimize the seeping is to secure a tight rubberband around the top of each cuff.

I would be leery of using any bleach products as the seeping water would likely damage the black sleeves.

I don't know what to use? Is there a good brand of fabric dye or something that will turn it to a genuine black?

Some dyes will work much better for this purpose than others. You should avoid all-purpose dyes, such as Rit dye, because they fade quickly and bleed forever in the laundry. The best kind of dye is fiber reactive dye, which will stay dark for years.

There are several different brands of fiber reactive dye. They all work well on cotton. The most convenient, if you live in Europe or Australia, is black Dylon Machine dye. This dye, which is designed for front-loading washing machines, contains a Remazol dye that works very well. Dyeing in the washing machine is the easiest method. If you live in North America, you can buy Procion MX black dye and use it in a top-loading washing machine, along with salt and soda ash. Follow the link in the sources below for more information.

Other brands of fiber reactive dye that work well include Tulip One Step Fashion Dye and Dylon Permanent Dye. You won't find these at the gorcery store, but a good crafts store should carry them. You can also buy Procion MX dye by mail-order; see "Sources for Dyeing Supplies Around the World", below.

No matter what kind of dye you use, always use two to four times as much of the dye for black as you would use for any other color. It takes a lot of dye to produce a very dark color such as black.

Get the garment wet first. Then fill the washer with the hottest water it can take (the garment) and add the Dye. Stir it up then add one cup of salt to the dye water and stir it up again. Then add your wet garment. Byee
