with a long pearl necklace
yeaah, but scratch that bit about long perl necklace, the outfit looks more moderny and with a perl necklace, would make it loook more old fashioned. i'v make that mistake before and half way through the day i accualy relised and took off the necklace.
I'm making a dress, just as a little project for myself - I need to keep myself busy somehow! :-) Well no, it's really for a fancy-dress day in Sept. but I don't want to let people know I'm this bothered about it! Tee hee!
Thing is, I want to go as Virginia Woolf, or Beatrix Potter - so basically I'm looking at Edwardian patterns. I know how to make the dress, and I don't think it would take me too long, but it's the fabric that's giving me grief!
It should really be white (cotton voile or muslin, I think) but I don't have any left over from my Regency project. So I'm stuck with 3 metres of Cath Kidston fabric, which I think may be too 1930's to look right.
I don't really want to buy lots more fabric, unless it wouldn't cost too much.
The Cath Kidston fabric is this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V ISuperSize&item=270423350348
Wysteria in Rayon.
Do you think I could get away with making an Edwardian 1909 lingerie dress ( http://www.lavendersgreen.com/settlemeie r%20tea%20april%202007%20005-web.jpg ) from the Rayon?
All (useful) help appreciated! :-)
Thanks!
Clare

ich don't like the cath kidson fabric
have you thought of using sheet fabric from asda
you can get plain white single set (top and bottom sheet) for about £3 (poly cotton mix)
its what i used to make my daughter a victorian smock for her victorian week at school (they asked if they could keep it)
its a bit see through but doubled at certain bits would solve that problem
its a great length for a dress
and a few scraps of lace your done
hope that helps
thick. i am looking for a lighter weight cotton but do not know what this might be called: poplin? lawn? calico? voile? does anyone know the best cotton for this purpose? i am looking for something lightweight but not sheer.
thanks
sue
thanks, everyone! is cotton batiste very expensive? what about calico? i have noticed it is cheaper than quilting cotton. would this be OK for toddler's dresses? i would like to pay no more than $5/yd. thanks for your help! sue

I'm trying to create a costume similar to those of the character "Niobe." A majority of Niobe's dresses are made from what seems to be a softly draping, crinkled, cotton/linen type of fabric that looks heavier than voile or gauze. I was hoping someone could tell me if the fabric has a specific name/ what it is so I might buy some- or how to recreate it...
http://www.discoverychannel.co.uk/_fansi tes/rome/1024x768c.jpg is the picture I found of Niobe.
I have a couple shirts made of this type of fabric, so I tried to find out for you. Some of the clothes from this catalog are made from this fabric: http://www.devalifewear.com but the pictures on their site are too small to really see anything.
It seems to be called crinkle cotton or micropleat cotton. Here are a few links that might help you:
Similar fabric: http://www.voguefabricsstore.com/store/p roduct.php?productid=3042&cat=0& page=1
A site selling organic cotton clothing, which calls this fabric "micropleat knit" (see the 4th picture down): http://www.cottonfieldusa.com/our-fabric s-organic-pg-18.html
A shirt with a similar style (although not quite the same), at a site which sells Renfaire costumes: http://www.renstore.com/ItemMatrix.asp?G roupCode=CHI1025&eq=chi1025-1&Ma trixType=1
They also sell patterns but I don't think any of them are what you're looking for.
Hope some of this was helpful to you.
