Cotton Dress Size

It's not the wash that shrinks as much as the dryer. Hot water will fade it. Wash then dry the heck out of it. Wash/dry it again, you might get a bit more shrinkage the 2nd/3rd time if you need it smaller. Don't ever wash colors in hot water.

I was recently given a 100% cotton dress shirt but unfortunately its a size too large. I've been to several of the store outlets but none of them have the shirt in my size. Usually I'd just change it to another but I really like this shirt so was hoping that I could perform a "controlled shrink" on it. It's currently a size large but I'm a size small. Any tips so that i don't overdo it?
Sorry, it's a size medium, not large

If it's cotton, about all you'll have to do is wash it in hot water, and then dry in a hot dryer. Cotton shrinks a good bit, but not sure if it will be enough.

I've been looking forever for a long , cotton knit ,T-shirt style dress, with long or 3/4 sleeves, size XL.
Cannot find a suitable one anywhere ,not even eBay !
Can anyone help ?
Or even suggest a sewing pattern?
It has to be long - --to mid-calf.
