~~I use white vinegar on any kind of stains like that. It breaks down body stains better than anything I've used. Spray it right on the stain, let it sit 15 minutes or so then wash. I also add vinegar to my bleach compartment on all whites and linens. It makes whites whiter. The best secret for whites is to double rinse them. So if you can, set your machine for a second rinse, if not you can set it back to rinse before completion. This makes sure your whites are really clean, the vinegar keeps soap build up, and everything comes out fresh and clean. You will not have vinegar odor either-so don't worry about that. You don't even need softener-the vinegar does that too, but I still use it for the nice scent it leaves. For your shirts, just wash as you normally do with the added vinegar and rinse, you'll be very white collared again!~~

I have a black dress with a white cotton collar attached. The collar is dingy (almost gray) through several washes. How can I get it white looking again without damaging the black part of the dress?

I would use some spray and wash. Let it soak for a while
before washing it.

If I spray the inside collar of a new 100% cotton dress shirt before using it, will the Scotchguard prevent sweat stains (i.e., "ring-around-the-collar")?

actually if you put some powder or corn startch on your NECK before you wear the shirt, it will prevent stains on your shirt collars...also using Shout, Clorox Oxy Stain remover BEFORE you wash your shirts will take the stains off...(if they're white shirts...get some RIT color remover or whitener at the store...comes in a little box or bottle in the laundry isle usually.)

It is a baptism dress with ribbon and turned yellow from being in the bag for 10 years. It was dry cleaned 10 yrs ago and now yellowed in the collar.

I get sweat / oil stains on the collar of my cotton dress shirts. When I clean them at home, I treat them with a stain remover (such as Zout) immediately after taking them off (before the stain sets) and again before laundering (sometimes several days later).

I am just starting to use a cleaner for my shirts and wondering how I should handle this. It seems like it makes sense to pre-treat the stained collars, before the stain sets, but I am wondering if this will be incompatible with anything that the cleaner does. These are all 100% cotton shirts.

Bonus Q: Does the cleaner simply launder these shirts, or use some special process?

Cleaners do not launder shirts in soap and water. If you will pretreat your stains at home your shirts will most likely turn grey. Cleaners use chemicals and blueing to get the shirts white and clean. It is not a good idea to wash shirts and launder them professionally. Best to do only one.
