Black Cotton Halter Dress

I want a really casual black dress.
I'm 15 years old. 5'4 and on the smaller side

and i want an above the knee, cotton black dress
no embellishments, lace, etc.
delias use to have like the perfect dress, but they don't anymore :(
it was a black halter cotton dress

so if you know what dress i'm talking about anything like that would work

preferably under $40, but thats kind of hard to find so whatever

Its a plain black cotton bubble dress.
Strapless, though at the moment it has a thin halter strap that i attached last time i wore it.
It was not an expensive dress but I want to fancy it up, what can I do or how can I alter or add to it too make it stand out?!

Sew a bit of ruffley net or lace to the bottom too make it look like a petticoat or something sticking out. A bright color, like hot pink. Add a brooch to it at the top off centered. Or wear a bright belt around it.

I have a decades dress down day this coming Thursday for school.
I'm a freshman and my decade id 1950's.

Well, I really don't think you'll be able to just magically sew a dress by following written words on here as opposed to buying a pattern. You can go to Goodwill and find really cheap dress patterns. I see the little packages all the time. You have to have a picture/pattern to go by, otherwise you're going to be sewing this dress out of your imagination. That may or may not be a good thing, but I certainly can't just tell you on here how to sew a dress. If you are really adamant about sewing this, you need to at least take your measurements to know if you have enough fabric.... use this website to know exactly what to measure:

I love all of the dresses. Here are my opinions on each:

1) My favorite of the 4. Floor length is the traditional prom look, and black never grows old. I think the style is very pretty and the sparkly accents are great.

2) Way too informal and the print is too bold.

3) The dress is ok, but the red is a strong color and I don't like the bottom of it.

4) This is my 2nd favorite dress. The middle part is beautiful and will allow the top to frame your chest and neck. I don't like the bottom very much, but the dress is beautiful.

I think that if you go with a floor length gown, do your hair down so you're not too overdone. If it's a cocktail dress, I would go more dramatic on the hair and jewlery. Whatever you choose, have fun with it!
