100 Cotton Dress Shirt

I took about 6-7 dress shirts to get dry cleaned and medium starched and her eyes almost jumped out of her head!

She said that she had never heard of dress shirts getting dry cleaned-- rather, she said I should just have them wash and press them.

Is this lady crazy? I thought dress shirts should always be drycleaned if you want a nice finish?

They did a crappy job with the press any way.

maybe it's better to wash em at home, but hey, if you can afford to have em dry cleaned all the better!

Can I do that again to shrink it again, or is it a one time thing?

If so, do they shrink full one size or 1/2 size ? Because some of my 100% cotton dress shirt from Banana Republic shrunk very little....

Well American Eagle preshrinks their clothes so the shirt should fit the same as it does when u first try it on. If it is 100% cotton it would fit only like a teensy weensy bit

I was recently given a 100% cotton dress shirt but unfortunately its a size too large. I've been to several of the store outlets but none of them have the shirt in my size. Usually I'd just change it to another but I really like this shirt so was hoping that I could perform a "controlled shrink" on it. It's currently a size large but I'm a size small. Any tips so that i don't overdo it?

If it's cotton, about all you'll have to do is wash it in hot water, and then dry in a hot dryer. Cotton shrinks a good bit, but not sure if it will be enough.

What heat setting do i put it on and is there an order i iron the parts in?

Most irons have the type of cloth suggested for each setting on the dial. So if your iron has a "cotton" setting, use that one. If not, set it just hot enough to steam.

1. Iron the yoke of the shirt first. This is the back part that goes across your shoulders. It may be a separate piece from the back of the shirt, or it may not. It's important to do this part first because you will always wrinkle the rest of the shirt if you do it last.

2. Do the collar next. Lay it flat on the ironing board and press, then fold it down (the way you wear it) and press the crease so it's crisp over the tie.

3. Next you want to do the front of the shirt, starting at the sides (armpit part first) and moving toward the front. Instead of trying to iron in between all the buttons, turn the button panel over (so the buttons are facing down against the board) and iron straight down, from top to bottom, along the button panel.

4. Do the back of the shirt the same way as the front, starting at the sides and then working your way to the center of the back.

5. Iron the sleeves last. They are the trickiest part. My husband doesn't like a crease in his shirtsleeves, so I use a rolled-up towel inside the sleeve to hold the shape while I iron from the shoulders down to the cuffs with the steam on all full blast. If you like a crease, then fold the sleeve as straight as you can, starting at the point of the shoulder (this is not always where the actual shoulder seam is, so make sure it looks right to you before you press it) and then iron very firmly from the shoulder to the cuff, turn the sleeve over and iron the other side the same way. That will give you a very stiff crease.
