explain how the fair trade scheme makes production of cotton sustainable?

Hi. For one thing scientists have just announced that they have genetically engineered cotton to make the seeds edible. (They are normally poisonous.) The seed could feed about 500,000,000 people. This will make the growth and export more desirable.

Want to start a sustainable t-shirt business (using organic cotton). Where and how should I begin?
Napkins for Painters Hall

location is in Toronto, Canada. Any textile companies or places where I can start?

Finding suppliers is NOT where you should begin.

Finding customers and building a marketing plan is where to begin. What evidence do you have that your business will succeed? What do you know about the t-shirt business? The customers? How to reach them? Whether they care about organic vs not? Competitors? How to come up with ideas for shirts? etc.

Where to find sustainable fabrics and low impact dye?
Eco Friendly Wristlet Purse Bag Red Yellow Blue Stripes on Natural cotton

Hey... I'm a 16 year old aspiring artist/clothing designer.

I like to make alot of clothing and graphic designs. So... I was wondering... where can I find sustainable/organic fabrics (organic cotton, hemp, bamboo) in plain colors (white) for clothing? As well as fabric dyes that are low impact?

Thanks :D (ps... I live in little Iowa... so any online stores? Or... perhaps they may carry it in chain fabric stores?)

What you're looking for is called PFD (prepared for dyeing) or greige (pronounced "gray") goods.

I'd start by sending you to http://www.dharmatrading.com for some dye and process information -- they carry a few "sustainable fabrics" (I do not count bamboo as sustainable -- the processes being used are pretty environmentally nasty).

Remember, if you want deep colors on cotton, look for mercerized cotton to start with. The difference is night and day...

Also how is cotton sustainable???

This question has a lot of answers. But I think the main answer is the allergy reaction to some people skin, If you are talking about the clothing wear. And its not from the cotton but from the chemcails use to clean the cotton from the gin to the dying and to the wholesaler. But if you are talking about the oil use for cooking I can only say that some people may get a contact from the gin's workers. Gin also known as cotton gin is where the cotton starts its life after the feilds. Its gets its first washing and drying then baled and load unto trucks and took to a compress, etc...

Is it better to buy 100% organic cotton, or 60% bamboo/40% standard cotton?
martisor

Speaking in terms of clothing and towels specifically. I have been able to find some towels that are 60% bamboo and 40% standard cotton. But I would of course prefer to buy something that is 100% organic. But I know that bamboo is an excellent resource as well.
So what's better in terms of being sustainable?

Both are good materials for sustainability so I would determine this by which has had to be transported less. BUY LOCAL, you can have a product that is very eco friendly but if you put it in a truck, plane, boat and ship it around the globe twice it stops being eco friendly. Look at where you are and look at where the products have to travel and buy the one less traveled.

Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali are collectively known as the ‘cotton 4’ because they are cotton producing countries in West Africa and have been trying to the get the US to reduce their cotton subsidies for almost a decade.

The US subsidises its cotton production which leads to over-supply and subsequently a low market price for cotton. Today I heard Ambassador Samuel Amehou from Benin speak at an Africa Trade Network event about the desperation that farmers are feeling and the injustice of the situation “Farmers are losing hope for their cotton. Something needs to be done urgently otherwise our cotton sector will die and many farmers will end up in a bad situation.”
