Lily-Sugar 'n Cream 100% Cotton Yarn: Do the dark colors run? How can I test?

Will be making a scarf for mother's day with white, rose pink, and hot pink yarn. Wondering if the darker hot pink color will run and ruin it. Thanks for all your help!

I have had the dark Lily colors run, especially the dark reds, purples, navy blue and black. Every time I use them now, I first wind the skein onto a wire coat hanger and tie it in several places to keep it from coming unwound. Then I soak it in the sink in very hot water that I have added 4 tablespoons of salt and 1 cup vinegar. after swishing it around over a 15 minute period, I rinse it in cold water bath at least 3 times, then let it hang dry. That will normally set the colors so they don't run,
Just to be on the safe side, if you are worried, and it's already made, tell your Mom it's best to wash it in cold water.

I have to my surprise, Sugar"n Cream and Peaches & Creme 4 ply cotton yarn, what is the difference?

When changing color can I use them together? they look and feel the same.
I meant to say to my surprise I have both, I do not know why or how.

Their both worsted weight ...so interchanging will not be an issue.

Sugar n Cream is made by Lily brand yarn. I am not sure who makes Peaches n cream. I think it's a cheaper "copy cat " of the popular Sugar n Cream yarn...I have only seen it at Walmart... I checked around and it can be purchased online too from a few different sites.

If my memory serves me well it is a bit softer than the Sugar n Cream.

I have made nice potholders containing BOTH yarns.

Can anyone recommend a good string bag pattern?

I'd like to make some eco-friendly string bags to use in lieu of plastic grocery bags when I shop. I have some sugar 'n' cream yarn (cotton worsted) to use for this project. I knit and crochet, so either sort of pattern would be fine. I'm looking for something that doesn't take forever to make, has a moderate capacity, and is strong enough to hold a half gallon of milk or some canned goods. Patterns can be off the web, of your own devising, or recommending a book with a good pattern would be fine too. Thanks for your help!

Dishcloth cotton (Peaches & Crème, Sugar 'n Cream, etc.) is perfect for this project. If you weren't stashbusting, I'd suggest buying some hemp or flax. A bag crocheted out of plastic shopping bags would be way too weak to hold canned goods, much less milk.

Best 100% cotton yarn to crochet & knit garments with?

Looking for brand names of the best 100% cotton yarn for sweater, hat, & scarf making. I've been using Sugar n' Cream, which is nice, but wondering if there's better stuff out there for crochetting and knitting garments.

Brown Sheep's Cotton Fleece is a very nice, worsted weight cotton yarn for sweaters and it holds its color when washed, it's also reasonably priced. Takhi's Cotton Classic is a DK weight, mercerized cotton, but it runs on the more expensive side, but it is gorgeous stuff to knit with. Mission Falls has a nice cotton yarn, also expensive, though, as is Manos' Cotton Stria.

Sugar 'n Cream can be a bit stiff in the wearing in tighter gauges, Peaches 'n Cream is just a bit lighter and less so. Lion Cotton is pretty decent, too.

help needed in dyeing pure cotton yarn?

this is my first time in dyeing yarn. im using "sugar and cream" to dye. I followed the instruction on the box, but i researched the net and found out that the dye can wash out or the color being faded is there any details that im missing here?

Hi,

It sounds as though you are using Rit Dye...which I wouldn't...it is inexpensive but impermanent.

Here is a reputable supplier of everything to do with dyeing; I can recommend Procion MX dyes, which are the dyes that quilters and lots of others use for permanence on cotton.

Dharma also sells a retention agent called Retayne which works well.
As someone else suggested, you will need a fixative (normally soda ash, which is readily available as pool chemical).

Your library will have books about dyeing.

BTW, winding it around a plastic soda bottle works well.

It is the easiest one I’ve ever used. I showed him to knit on his fingers, it’s easy. Fist you make a slip knot and place it on the thumb of your left hand, then weave the yarn through your fingers, go around the pinky and weave back. Make sure to hold your hand with your palm facing you. If you are a leftie start with the yarn on your right hand Weave the yarn through and back again until you have 2 strings on each finger then lift the bottom string over the top (and over your finger) the knitting will form at the back of your hand. Weave the yarn through again and lift the bottom string over the top. continue until it is the length you want. This is a good introduction to loom knitting.
