Altering sewing pattern that calls for stretch fabric?
made this for me not you jacket1

I bought a dress pattern and lovely cotton dress fabric- upon closer examination the pattern calls for knit/stretch only. It's New Look 6748, but I was planning to add a little fullness to the front to make a maternity dress. What will happen if I make this pattern with the fabric I bought, which has no stretch at all?

Don't do it. I work every day with stretch fabrics. the patterns designed for stretch fabrics are cut differently with much less ease and room than ones designed for woven fabrics. For instance a pattern for a skirt of woven fabric adds 3-4 inches to the hip measurement, when knit patterns do not. These ease measurements are not built into knit patterns, they assume you are looking for a smooth, tighter fit, especially around the shoulders, arms, back and bust. Stick with patterns for woven fabrics. You will be disappointed in the drape and fit of your garment if you decide to try it.

When making a kitchen apron, what is the best fabric to use?
pool wrap

I see alot of kitchen fabrics that are made from Cotton Fabrics. Do they need to be backed with a different material to make them thicker or stronger?

This is in regards to making one from scratch with a sewing machine?

I have my pattern and my cotton fabrics. Just seems so thin?

Any ideas? Thank you

Cotton has always been the fabric of choice. I have made several and some I wear when hanging the laundry (big pockets for the clothes pins), cleaning and sewing.

If the fabric is too thick or heavy is can pull down at the neck and give you a pain in the neck (full length apron) and the extra layer of heavy fabric can get a little warm.

No backing is necessary...it will add warmth and you want to be "cool" when working in the kitchen.

If you are making a half-apron, you may want to interface the waistband to make it more stable.

Is there a way to take a piece of fabric and turn it into a patch?
YIP 365.305 :: Citrus slices in gray and yellow

I can't find the exact patch I want so I was wondering if there was a way to make a piece of fabric into a patch. I have tried that iron tape that you put between the fabric and whatever your ironing it to but once I wash it, it comes off. Is there another way? I don't want the piece to be flimsy because I need it to cover a hole in a pair of pants. So I want it to be a bit thicker but all I can find is cotton fabric in the pattern I want.

A number of times I've cut out pieces of fabric, sewed the edges under, then sewed that to my jeans as a patch.

Good luck!

Where can I buy fabric in the UK to sew baby clothes?
Citrus Slices in gray and yellow

I'm expecting and thought I'd make some baby clothes, I have the patterns but not been able to source any suitable fabrics that I can buy in the UK as yet. I've mainly been looking on-line and in local fabric shops. I would like cotton interlock knit fabrics, that are colourful, patterned and a good price. If you know of any fabric shops that stock such fabric it would be great to hear from you, thanks.

if you have a local market, i find lots of unusual and good fabrics on the market stalls, also my local fabric shop order fabric remnants for me, if you ask any shop i am sure they would help. also i have had some brilliant fabrics off ebay.. good luck...

I have fabrics that I want to paint on and hang as wall art. What paints will work? Oil? Acrylic?
Vintage Unbreakable Boutique Tree Decorations

I don't have any fabric paints and don't want to buy any. I don't plan to wash the fabric after it's painted, just hang or wrap on canvas and hang. I have silks and other patterned fabrics, rayons, cotton etc. Thanks!

~acrylics would be best, there are craft acrylic paints at some dollar stores, Walmarts and craft related stores like Micheal's,

you may have option to use oils, but may not as user friendly for materials, suggest teat patches with silk/ rayon materials, may not mix well, or not use with paints,

  • Taking Stock of the Works in Progress: Pookie Edition « IPB Living

It’s been almost a year since we both started quilting, and it seems like now is a great time to step back and take stock of what’s in our active pipelines right now. We’ve both just finished up some quilts and are revving up on exciting new projects — so what’s on tap?

When I last checked in with a quilting progress report back in July , I had just finished “Prairie Gothic” and was starting to buckle down on “Magic Carpet” while starting in on my Christmas quilt, and while wishing I could nibble a bit on “Red Letter Day”. Let’s see what I’ve managed to do in the four months since!

First up, I did finish “Magic Carpet”.
