It is an Indian cotton bed cover (from India). My friend bought the same one and washed it right away. She said all the nice bright colors went dull and was no longer so appealing to the eye. She washed in cold water with only fabric softener.
Should I wash it in hot or cold water?? To set the color?
Actually a cup of table salt diluted in hot water then added to the laundry in the washing machine will set colors and prevent most from transferring or bleeding. This works on most fabrics and dyes, but there will be some that nothing will work on.
Addition: Depending on the fabric content, if it is hot water safe, go that way. If you dissolve the salt in hot water then add it to the laundry if you must use cold water, it should also work but may not be quite as effective.

What are good fabrics (cotton, silk); types ( such as Kota dari); and decorations (embroidered or not, how much, etc.) for both sarees and salwar kameez type outfits, if you want to look tasteful and educated, but not overdressed, for casual day wear and for special occassions? I am going to order some and make some, and I want to look like I know what I'm doing, not like a tourist playing dress-up. I am planning to live in India for much of every year. I asked people I know in India, but most are men and didn't really understand my question. I hope someone out there does. Thanks.
i know for special occasions the sari is made of silk , but i would think that for everyday use cotton is a good idea especially since it gets hot in india

I was wondering what the actual robes were made out of in the movies. I heard Indian hand-spun cotton, but I can't even confirm that this material even exists. Does anyone know for certain?
Google "Khadi" and you should get a Wikipedia link,it's not very detailed, but it's a start.
I believe that's the material you're looking for. It's what is commonly referred to as Indian Homespun.Of course you could make it out of anything really, but this is a good choice because it's not hot in warm weather.Where however a Wool Cloak or something like that would be very Hot.

When buying an indian suit ,which fabric would you go for: cotton, georgette, polyster? And why would you choose that fabric?
cotton is good especially for the summer to keep cool, i find the georgette irritates and the polyester is too static. The only thing with cotton is that is creases when you sit but its ok if your going casual.

Genetic engineering turns 'Fabric of Our Lives' into edible ...
LUBBOCK, Texas — “The Fabric of Our Lives” may soon feed millions.
A Texas researcher has found a way to reduce toxin in cottonseed that until now could only be eaten by cattle. The bovines’ multiple stomachs gradually digested the poisonous substance called gossypol.
The new seeds can be eaten by pigs, chickens, fish and humans and could show up in protein bars, shakes, breads, cookies and other foods within about 10 years. The amount of cotton already grown worldwide contains enough protein to feed 500 million people per year, researchers said.
“There are a lot of poor people that cannot afford diets that contain a reasonable amount of protein,” said Keerti S. Rathore, the Texas A&M University researcher who made the breakthrough. “It will nice to be able to utililize this source.”
