What energy resources are used in the harvesting and production of cotton?
Harvesting Cotton with a John Deere 7760 Cotton Picker | Top 20 Farm Photo #1

I need help with my school assignment. What energy is used in harvesting cotton and making cotton products, and what is the energy's source? I thought maybe petrol used in the machines???

Of course, petrol or diesel is used to operate tractors when preparing the soil and planting the seed then cultivating. And to operate harvesting machines (strippers). Fuel is used to haul cotton from the fields to the gin. At the gin where cotton is processed or cleaned they use electricity and perhaps natural gas to power heaters, blowers, conveyors, and presses. From the gin the cotton goes to a plant that compactly presses it further. From there it is transported to a mill. These days U. S. cotton goes all over the world. It could move by train to a port. The train might burn diesel fuel. At the port it would be hoisted aboard transport ships that burn fuel oil for the trip overseas.
At the mill where fabric is made they would be using mainly electricity.

However, one large use of energy is for fertilizer. Cotton may not have to be fertilized but most will be. "Manufacturing 1 ton of anhydrous ammonia fertilizer requires 33,500 cubic feet of natural gas."

They have great big machines like combine harvesters which rip all the balls of cotton off the little bushes it grows on. If you do a search (on images) for 'cotton plant' it should show you some pics and give you some links - there are organisations like the Cotton Growers' Federation (?) which have very informative websites.

d. Cotton cultivation quickly depleted the land of nutrients, so planters moved their operations westward towards richer soils.
e. Cotton brought a uniform and steady prosperity to the lower South.

D

it could also be E, but you need to have a specific time frame. For a while it did bring uniform and steady prosperity to the lower south.

Can a person have allergies from being around cotton while it is being harvested?
FINE ROOT HAIRS ON COTTON ROOTS

I just got back from visiting my family in south Georgia, where I grew up, and I noticed that there was a fine dust in the air, emanating from the local cotton gin, and I just wondered if that causes people to develop allergies. I never noticed that when I lived there, and I know that the peanut dust that hangs in the air isn't good for anyone, but peanut harvesting is mostly past now. And my six-month-old daughter and I were both sneezing like crazy. What do you think?

Allergies r a common prob now a days. Mostly caused by the lack of contact with the allergen producers. Your body had probably grown unused to the dust from the cotton and had a adverse reaction to the dust. Air filters and disinfectent have essentially weakened our systems to the point where they can no longer handle contact with the most common things we come into contact with. Like dust pollen germs and bacteria. Your body would eventually become immune again to the dust and so would your daughters. But u would suffer quite abit before that happened. So now u must resort to antihistamins. The human body is not as fragile as everyone thinks it is nowadays. It has the capability to overcome minor irritations. How have we lasted all this time before airfilters and disenfectents??? Yes we have much more pollutents in the air due to industrialization. And more contact with germs and bacteria due to our ability to move around more freely. And it is good to wash your hands and use handsanitizer and clean up after handling poultry and meat. But the old saying still holds true a little dirt never hurt. And as allways moderation. Over contact with germs and bacteria and allergens is bad but a little wont hurt u.

  • Mild, warm conditions promote harvesting

The Rolling Plains and counties to the north, nearer Lubbock, already had a hard freeze and their harvest was ahead of that of his local producers, he said. But Mitchell County producers didn't wait for a hard freeze and proceeded to defoliate. As a result, the Mitchell County cotton harvest is probably a little further along than usual for this time of year.

Rain alleviated the drought but delayed harvesting of sesame, sunflower and hay. Farmers were getting ready to fertilize crop land. The pecan harvest was under way; some native varieties produced well, others did not. Orchard pecan yields were good where there was irrigation, although nut size may be slightly smaller than normal....
