Egyptian Cotton Duvet

I bought a fantastic Egyptian cotton duvet cover and a pair of pillow cases; they are luxuriously soft and a dream to sleep with.

For sometime now I have noticed the top of the cover has become noticeably discoloured. At first I thought it was the direct sunlight, I was correctly informed that the sun bleaches, so this would not be the culprit.

I wash it regularly with biological soap tablets and a 1/4 cup of white vinegar in place of fabric softener. I have a very good front loading washing machine too. I follow the care labels correctly also.

It could well be that it is just dirty, as it is the top of the duvet cover. I was hoping some one could give some ideas as to why it has changed colour, is it just a build up of dirt and if so why has it not been washed out?

The care label has the no bleach symbol, but does any one advise me to bleach and would it solve the problem? I thought this was the most likely solution.

I know there are many stain removing products on the market, but I am not sure comfortable I am with them. I don't leave stains and wash to make sure things stay clean in the first place.

Try using Napisan, you can use it in the washing machine. I think you may be better off when you have it bright again to wash it more often. I say this because I used to have a white bed valance and as they don't get washed so often as sheets etc. I noticed that the skirt bit was a noticeable yellowy colour compared with the centre (that was under the mattress). White, surprising, goes a bad colour from being exposed to the air. Weird I know but true.

My sharpie pen (red) fell on my brand new 800 Count Egyptian Cotton (pale blue) duvet. I have tried vodka, alcohol, and even clorox 2. I can't get it out. I have even been using one of those mini ultrasonic scrub-brushes to try and lift the stain. I am afraid to wash it until I get the stain out. Any advice? I also added oxy-clean laundry liquid too.

I agree with the Hairspray solution. It also removes lipstick.
If it fails........try " Zout " stain remover from Target, Walmart or local grocery store. It works for me on lots of hard stains.

Matalan do Egyptian cotton at exceptionally reasonable prices. Around (if I remember correctly) £8 per single sheet, £12 for the duvet case, and £7 for a pair of pillow-cases.

I need a cover for my down comforter and I'm really big on softness so I'm looking for an Egyptian cotton sateen cover. Nothing too heavy either. I want to spend no more than about $200. I'm considering The Company Store's "Legends" Egyptian cotton comforter cover, but am wondering if you have any other suggestions. Thanks.

please check out smartbargains.com first!!!! They sell very high quality linens for rock bottom prices. I just bought a duvet set from them, and i cant believe the quality! They get top name brand stuff! But they sell out things quickly, so if you see something you like, dont hesitate.
Yes, high thread count can be important. HOWEVER, in my experience, any thread count over 600 actually is not as soft. It makes sense if you think about it, more thread equals a heavier fabric. The appeal of high thread count has to do with longevity to some, and others actually like a heavier sheet. I like to stay in the 400-600 range personally. And also, the more you wash these linens, the softer they will get.
