I have a few small samplers to cross stitch that only require 2 colours each, but I don't want to waste a whole skein of cotton on something I will only have a handful of stitches for. Would I be able to lighten a cotton skein using the age old blanching with hot water or diluted bleach? I figure it could work seeing as it works every week with my laundry.
DMC floss always has to be rinsed before use because it will bleed a bit when wet the first time.
If it's still not light enough, add a bit of bleach to hot or warm water and watch carefully. Bleach is good at lightening textiles, but too much exposure can weaken fibers. Slowly add a bit more bleach if needed. Even more color may come off after the bleach and water mixture is rinsed off the threads.

I'm looking for dmc floss cotton 3413. I was shopping at michaels and couldn't find it there. I believe this is supposed to be a dark gray. I've also looked at threadexpress.com and i did not see it on this site. I only need one skein.
I have already tried dmc.com, dmc-usa.com, and dmcworld.com and i could not find the floss.
Look on the instruction pamphlet for the publisher and get their e-mail or phone number and get in touch with them and ask for the correct number for the floss or a substitute you can use .

DMC Stranded Cotton Thread
At best it is going to be iffy.
1. You will need to rewind the floss onto a spool of some kind, so the floss will flow easily to the needle.
2. Floss is 6-ply, whereas the thread used for needle-punch is usually a thicker single ply. (6-ply means that you have six threads twisted together). This may cause you problems as the different threads may try to split apart with each punch.
It's been a long time since I did any needlepunch, so I may be completely wrong on this.
Besides, it's always worth trying! You always learn something when you experiment.
I am trying to cross stitch an E.Bradley design for a pillow using DMC mouline or perle cotton. I already have the DMC Wool number conversion, from E.Bradley, but I need to transfer those numbers to DMC cotton mouline floss. DMC provides a chart for their colors, but the chart is not complete and many numbers are missing from their chart. I have contacted DMC about this problem, but I have received no reply. Thank you.
I just looked on the DMC-USA website. The floss/tapestry wool conversion chart is 9 pages long and seems to cover every floss number. It may be you think it's incomplete because not every tapestry wool color has an exact match in embroidery floss but I think this is about as close as you're going to get, unless you want to hand-match the colors yourself.

Anyway, with your software you could create a design like this using your backstitch outline stitch and the little pompoms we have at the store in several color choices. These would stitch up pretty quickly. The little postcard cutie designs I did from Bunny Hill take from 5-8 minutes to complete and that's using DMC and Maderia cotton threads with my machine slowed down a bit - and these remind me of the designs on the towels above. I've got two more blocks to stitch and the top will be completed.
