I've been cruising around web sites for days trying to find
suitable fabric to make long drapes, vintage style. Need
really dark green velvet like the old, vintage theatre curtains.
Any ideas? Already checked out EBay and other "vintage
curtain" sites. There must be somebody out there that
makes this fabric. Help. and thanks.

There's a jacket I want that's made from it, but a friend told me that it'd probably fall apart really quick and will be hard to wash. But what is it? Is it a good coat material? How would I wash/care for it?
I've only seen pictures of a coat like it. It's a purple, gothic trench coat with black fur trim and lining sold on ebay and they're custom made each order, so I doubt it'll even come with a tag. ^^; But my friend said that velvet doesn't wash well and I'd end up having the velvet fuz start to fall out after washing it just once. Though there's also the fur lining to worry about with washing... >.> Dry cleaning should work, right?

Velvet is traditionally made from silk and more recently made from synthetic fibers. It has a deep luxurious nap and gets a big hole if a hot cigarette ash fall on it. Velveteen is cotton fabric with a slightly velvet like nap. The advantages of velveteen are that it is less expensive, it is easier to sew, and it doesn't get burn holes so easily. Velveteen usually washes well, so perhaps it is some other aspect of the jacket that your friend believes make it fragile and difficult of care.

Wikipedia says velvet is typically made out of silk, and velveteen is made out of cotton. But, how can you tell the difference between the two fibers? Feel?

I don't think wikipedia is correct on this issue. There are good quality silk, cotton, and nylon velvets. Typically, velvet is heavier and thicker than velveteen, more expensive and is rarely stretchy.

From the FabricLink Textile Dictionary:

Velvet - A medium weight cut-pile constructed fabric in which the cut pile stands up very straight. It is woven using two sets of warp yarns; the extra set creates the pile. Velvet, a luxurious fabric, is commonly made with a filament fiber for high luster and smooth hand.


Velveteen - A cotton cut-pile weave fabric, utilizing extra fill yarn construction, with either a twill or a plain weave back. The fabric is woven with two sets of filling yarns; the extra set creates the pile.

So one of my most prized posessions is a custom made corset. I've had it for about three years, and never cleaned it. I know, gross, but I've only worn it a handful of times. I'd ask the person who made it for me what to do, but she seems to have fallen off the face of the planet.

The corset is cotton velveteen, has 18 stainless steel bones, and laces in the front instead of a busk. I know I can't exactly toss it in the washer (yikes! the horror!!), but just wiping down the inside liner with detergent and water isn't enough either. I've tried the at-home dry cleaning methods, but it just ends up smelling like sweat, B.O., and the scent of the cleaning cloth. I'm afraid if I take it to a cleaner, they will make me take the laces out, and I know I'll never get it put back together again as perfectly as it is, plus I'm afraid it will lose its shape. Any ideas? I know soaking ruins silk velvet, but what about cotton? I'm at the end of my stinky rope!

Best wayto clean would be by hand and lay flat to dry. Victoria secrets has a laundry-cleaner for delicates like that and will help lengthen the life of that garment, you can buy it at there stores or at there online store. I have three and I have had them for years and there in perfect condition!
