Where do i buy cotton thread at? Can i go to like a walgreens or somewhere like that or do i have to go to Joaans craft store place! i dont wanna buy any cotton thread online. So please does anyone know where i can buy cotton thread like a thrift store or something?
If you go to a quilter's shop or to Target, or any large chain store you should be able to get it there. Be Careful to buy Cotton thread and not polyester thread.
Bob Purcell (Chief Threadologist of Superior Threads) discusses Glazed (waxed, coated, starched) Cotton thread. Glazed cotton thread is for Hand ...
Can I used polyester or a polyester/cotton blend?
Is there a certain reason why they use cotton thread, or is that just the traditional way?
Cotton thread is used because it's less irritating to the skin.
Long staple, mercerized 100% cotton thread
2500M spools are available inÊ13 different shades
This all purpose thread is the standard for hand and machine quilting
I have just bought a Janome 300e and not too sure which bottom threads are the best to use, do you have to use special bobbin thread, it seems quite expensive compared to normal sewing thread.
Unfortunately, no. It has to be a bit stronger than regular thread because of the high speed of the machine dragging it through the bobbin case. And then it has to be more supple so the design won't be hard as a rock when it's finished. There are different weights of bobbin thread so you can pair it with your top thread, but in most cases, a regular thread would just break.

I crochet baskets and other items from cotton thread and, when done, I starch them with a 1:1 sugar and water mixture which is boiled to dissolve the sugar then cooled and the item dipped in it.
I have made something for my grandson from acrylic knitting worsted and would like it to retain its shape but I don't know if I can use the same starching method to accomplish this.
Anybody know?
Thanks,
Deana
The glue you would use is the kind that is white when still wet and dries clear and waterproof.
Often sold as wood glue.
It can be used as thin as one part glue in ten part water for a little stiffening, or nearly glue only for heavy duty work, but I would test it in a 1 glue in 5 water solution.
Make sure you test a little of the yarn in the glue, as the different man-made fibers react different on different glues.
i have a pattern for a lacy dress for a toddler that says:
100% mercerised cotton thread, 3-400Yd.balls
does it mean size 3 or 3 balls --if so, what size thread?
the frock looks lacy and fine
When in doubt, buy more than you need and keep the receipt.
That's what I typically end up doing.
When a project calls for mercerized cotton, you can substitute baby yarn and just use a smaller hook. The project will work as long as you check your gauge and stick to it.
(I read your pattern as meaning 3 balls of 400 yd. thread.)

Gerry's Face DYB Block Finished « Dimity's Fiber Adventures
Happy December 1st!!! This morning I woke up to the first snowfall of the season. It was a lovely sight, and it’s even better now because it’s all melting. LOL Can you tell Spring, Summer and Fall are my preferences?
Gerry’s face was picked up by my mail carrier yesterday and here is a picture of the completed block:

I had a really rough time with this and should have emailed her about it because I really, really, really wanted to make that face into a saloon owner – ala Kitty from Gunsmoke. Everything would have been red and gold, but Gerry requested we didn’t use red.
