How do I stop a hand woven cotton shawl from shedding?
IMGP8374Handwoven

My niece gave me a beautiful cotton hand woven shawl for Christmas. The first time I wore it, my black skirt looked like a blizzard had hit it. I have washed it and dried it twice, its better but I still have tons of lint on my clothes. Any ideas?

you can't stop it short of spraying varnish or laquer sealing the thing. bad quality linen does that - a lot!

where can i buy egyptian cotton clothing in cairo?
IMGP8366 Handwoven

When I go there I really want to find some egyptian cotton tunics and shawls etc. I know there are a few fabric districts but I'm looking for a place that actually has clothing..traditional stuff like kaftans also. BTW...i will be staying in Giza.

There is a nice shop for shawls and pashminas, caftans also and tea shirts all made of cotton. It is called Funky cotton. It is located near the pyramids at the beginning of the road to Alexandria a few yards after you take a turn to the right going to Alexandria. It is after a famous restaurant called Khristo.
Mobaco at the Nile Hilton hotel and the Intercontinental hotel has cotton clothes but not caftans and tunics, it has tea shirts, skirts, blouses etc.

How do you care for an authentic Pashmina?
IMGP8369 Handwoven

My MIL went to Israel and Egypt last month and sent me a Pashmina shawl as well as a Tshirt. Well, I know how to take care of a Tshirt, but are there any special ways to care for a Pashmina? The care instructions are in Hebrew and Arabic. It appears to be raw silk or a cotton/polyester blend, because it has a "shimmer" to it and the weave is very tight with short (3") fringe on each end. It is one-ply (so it is a year-round Pashmina) and about six feet long X two feet wide. Any information you can give as to its care would be appreciated (BTW I have a front-loading washer with "handwash" cycle and delictates bags. Should I put it in a delicates bag and wash it the the handwash cycle and let it air dry?)
PS I forgot to mention I'm allergic to detergents. I use All Free and Clear...Will it likely cause damage if I can't use Woolite?

don't put it in the washer especailly if if could be silk. hand wash it with woolite and let it air dry laying out flat. i know that will be hard because its so big. its not something that you have to wash too often which is good. i have a few pashminas and i love them, if you take good care of it it will last forever. also keep it out of direct sunlight when your storing it.

Do you think that prayer shawls should only be made from wool or cotton?
IMGP8372 Handwoven

Okay, I know prayer shawls are only for men but I do not like them making these prayer shawls that are made from polyester b/c that is like a manmade fabric, you know?

some people are allegic to wool. be sensitive. cotton is natural, go with that as an alternative

  • How to Prevent a Hand Woven Cotton Shawl From Shedding

Hand woven cotton shawl is made from a delicate and highly fibrous material. The fiber sheds off easily due to its low resiliency; however, this can be prevented using the following tips: avoid excessive exposure to sunlight, refrain from using acidic chemicals, avoid application of heat, prevent infiltration of bacteria and limit “wear and tear”

Shawl made from cotton is soft and breathable. Since it is loosely woven, it has the tendency to shed easily. To prevent it from shedding, here are some important things to follow namely:

    Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight

Prolonged exposure to sunlight causes fibers to become weak. Therefore, when drying cotton shawl, it is not recommended to leave it under the sunlight for so long. If possible, never expose it directly under the sun since most of the shawls come in average thickness, which easily dries up in the presence of wind.
