I have been having a discussion with a friend who owns his own dojo, he prefers to use Satin belts when he promotes his black belts. I prefer to use cotton belts during workouts or sparring, and reserve the Satin belts for Tournaments or Ceremony. He is thinking about changing his belts that are given. What type of belts do you prefer? What size width, and what brand do you recommend?
I prefer cotton,standard width,(1 3/4").
Uniforms and belts manufactured in Japan are my favorite.
(they are well made, last a long time, and are affordable)
Gene Watson - From Cotton To Satin
I'm making a quilt, and most of the material is cotton. But I have several "fat quarters" that are pure satin. I'd say maybe a1/4 of the quilt material will eventually be made from squares of this satin. Am I going to have any problems sewing this and keeping it together down the road? I know I may have some issues with fraying, so I bought some "No Fray" liquid stuff to put on the seam, so I'm not worried about that, but is it viable to sew cotton and satin together?
Several of you have said to do a zig zag stitch around the satin fabric. I've already done this on the uncut pieces of satin fabric, but do I need to do this once I cut out my squares as well?
Sure, just pin the two fabrics together. I would suggest to sew the cotton on the bottom from sliding if you are using a machine so you can keep an eye on the slippery satin on top. Also, don't use a heavy needle or thread. Did you check the instructions on the no fray for the satin. Some will bleed on satin so check it. Anyway, you should be fine! =>

I don't know if this will help but it was the best I could find -
To a modern weaver, satin (and sateen) are weave structures; it doesn't
matter what fibre is used, as long as the specific technical definition
is met (a repeat of at least five warp and five weft threads, with long
floats, and more detail that I won't go into). So you can have
cotton satin, silk satin, whatever.
Also satin is defined as follows - Satin is a cloth that typically has a glossy surface and a dull back. A satin is a warp-dominated weaving technique that forms a minimum number of interlacings in a fabric. If a fabric is formed with a satin weave using filament fibres such as silk, nylon, or polyester, the corresponding fabric is termed a "satin". If the yarns used are short-staple yarns such as cotton, the fabric formed is considered a sateen.
A satin-woven fabric tends to have a high luster due to the high number of "floats" on the fabric. Floats are "missed" interlacings, where, the warp yarn lays on top of the weft yarn, or vice versa. The floats tend to make the fabric look glossier as well as give it a smoother hand in most cases.
Many variations can be made of the basic satin weave including a Granite weave and a Check weave. Satin weaves are used commonly in apparel goods such as evening wear and fine clothing. They can also be found in linens, such as bedsheets as well as in some industrial usages and athletic gear such as shorts and baseball jackets. Satin weaves, twill weaves, and plain weaves are the 3 basic types of weaving by which the majority of woven products are formed.
Satin is commonly used in apparel: Satin baseball jackets, athletic shorts, women's lingerie, nightgowns, and evening gowns but also in some men's boxer shorts, shirts and neckties, and interior furnishing fabrics, upholstery and bed sheets. It is also used for Ballet shoes- all Pointe shoes are made of satin.

please help i live in southern california and it's already getting pretty hot. i currently have flannel bed sheets and they tend to absorb the warmth. so i was wondering which are the coolest and best to use in warm temps?? thanks!
Flannel sheets are great in winter because they are the warmest. As you have already discovered, it is time to change the sheets until next Nov. or Dec. when you can start using the flannel again. For summer, use cotton! If you can afford real Irish linen, that's better, but the expense... wow! Real silk is likewise fiercely expensive.
Most satin or silky-type sheets are polyester and they get miserably sticky when it is humid, and more so when both hot & humid. Avoid any synthetics.
I've just crocheted a baby blanket. With what should I line it? Satin? A thin cotton fabric? Some other fabric?
Sure! Cotton lining! Why not? And make the satin border, too! I still have mine! I would wash it, first, and the lining, too.
Hope this helps!

Vintage how-to — understanding materials
A good starting point is to educate your hand feel — this is probably easiest in a fabric store, where you can find a wide selection of different fibers, weaves and knits. But don’t forget to explore your own wardrobe! Hand feel alone is definitely not a foolproof way to recognize the materials or evaluate the quality of the garment. So I wrapped up a short introduction to fabrics — which yields actually to a lengthy post. I plan to continue with cleaning and repairing advice later.
Woven fabrics were first in widespread industrial production, Brits had the industrialized, steam operating power looms and spinning frames as early as on the beginning...
