I have had satin sheets before and i couldent keep anything on the bed including myself. lol. Is the egyptian cotton sateen a finer cotton?
Yes they are different. The 400 tc sateen cotton sheets have a smooth look and are very luxurious feeling but, unlike slippery satin, there is just enough friction to keep you between the sheets instead of sliding out of the bed. It's also easier to make the bed as the sheets don't move around as much when you're trying to straighten them out. My husband and I have that type of sheets on our bed.

bought bedsheets that are250 thread count.
front of package says 100% cotton
back of package says 100% cotton sateen (algodon)
note: the word algodon has and accent mark over the second "o"
i put the sheets on the bed already but the pkg says to maching wash before use. I really don't fell like taking them off, washing and putting them back on the bed. is it really necessary?
the sheets are all white --like snow--with pinstripes
"Algódon" is Spanish and means cotton.
They don't have to be washed right out of the package, but there is a starch-like product in them that makes them rather stiff, giving that new, crisp feel. It doesn't fully come out in the first wash, in my experience. Some people may be allergic or sensitive to it, so washing before using is a good idea.
The cotton sateen has a silk-like appearance without the feel of silk. I don't like the sateen because it feel greasy to me, and I find it creates a lot of static, especially in dry winter. It does look nice in bed sheets when woven with ordinary silk to create stripes, though.

What's with the sateen? I live in FL, is that going to be warm? I don't need warm. Please advise of what is considered "good" when it comes to sheets for the bed. It has to be cotton though. Any experiences with egyptian cotton? I saw some other ones there that read egyptian cotton.
It has been said here, but the lower the count, the ROUGHER the material is. The count refers to the numbers of lines per inch as it is woven. A 200 count for a bedsheet would leave most people feeling like they were sleeping on course wool. I personally wait till they go on sale and get nothing less than 400. 800 to 1000 feels like silk and is much more expensive. Sateen is a reference to the look and feel and is a good thing to have.

It does have a bit of a sheen to it.
Oh, my industry, right. I'm currently in grad school applying for a job working with health care professionals to help them improve compliance with certain procedures.
it really depends on your industry but i'd say absolutely!
Looking @ purchasing new sheets and am very confused about all the thread counts etc... and fibres. What sheets are going to be the softest whilst lasting the distance?
I have 500 and they are beautiful now i dont like sleeping on anything less, i have had them for about 3 years and they are still soft and silky like.
Im a fan of crisp sheets too and my sheets were crisp when i got them, after 3 years there not so crisp though

I still remember that I paid $12/yard (1.5 yards) for the Hoffman cotton sateen, bought at Kaufman's Fabrics in downtown Berkeley. I had to work 4 hours to pay for the fabric, notions and pattern at my job in the Chemistry lab, one of the highest-paying student jobs on campus. I did gulp at the expenditure, but they became my favorite volleyball shorts. I wore those giraffe shorts at least once a week for nearly a decade. But, a week after I signed up, someone contacted me and asked me if I was the person he went to HS and college with. I checked his pix and profile and recognized his friends as our friends. So I friended him. Then our former boss and the organizer...
