I live in Hamilton Ontario and don't drive so I can't really go to places outside the city. I like making quilts for infants and toddlers (crib size) and have decided to try it as a home business to suppliment our somewhat small income. I have inherited some nice cotton fabric from my grandparents house, but I am looking for some neat prints and printed panels. So far I have only been buying at wal-mart, I really like their discount fabric bins and if you go to a wal-mart in a higher income area they put out the nicer fabrics in the discount bin. I am looking to regularly get my hands on cute fabrics regularly instead of just as I find it in the discount bin. This way I will be able to make more than $2-$3/quilt without raising the price I sell them for. So many people nowadays don't appreciate the time and work that goes into a handmade quilt, since it is cheaper to buy a factory made one from the store.
I am just finishing a quilt and 2 fitted sheet set for my sister-in-law using the "jungle babies" panel and print, but just to make the 1 sheet and quilt I estimated it to cost me about $50, the fabric for the 2nd fitted sheet was part of the inherited fabric. But to go along with this set, I also have a crocheted stuffed elephant to go around a small lamp for the nursery as well. I have plans, finances permitting, to make a similar set for a close friend for her nursery in classic pooh bear, but that won't get started until early fall since she isn't due until Christmas.
at the moment most of the fabrics I buy are around $7-$8/metre. I am looking for prints and panels for quilts cheaper than that.
I live not far from Ottawa st, Last time I went shopping there was to buy the fabric for my wedding dress just over 3 years ago. I just don't have time to go looking through stores. I have a 2 year old, nuff said.
Wow! Hamilton is the best place in Canada for fabric! There are more fabric stores in Hamilton than anywhere else except toronto. Every year I make a trek to the Ottawa Street stores to find stuff I can never find elsewhere. If you check the yellow pages you'll find plenty of fabric stores, from Ann's to Fabricland to Len's Mill store and everything in between.
Ottawa Street has a website: http://www.shopottawastreet.com/ lots of places to choose from there!
For cottons and especially quilting cotton, Nothing beats good old Len's. It's the kind of store you can go to once a week and find something different every time. Here's a page with a map of the location: http://www.lensmill.com/locations.htm. There's also Fabricland, it's more for clothing, but they do have an excellent assortment of cotton prints. Like I said, there's plenty to choose from in Hamilton.

I print t-shirts on the side, funny ones, serious ones, sport teams, anything. I've been trying to come up with a name for my t-shirt company. but I'm too picky and I haven't come up with anything good. My target market right now is the college kid and people in there 20s, but I want something versatile that will mature along with me and my market. Most of all I want something catchy that is easy to remember in website address form. So here are my ideas, please pick your favorite if you'd like to tell me your age group(teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, etc.) that would help me, so I know what ages like what name. Any other advice is welcome.
Here are my ideas:
Wardrobe Dysfunction
Hot Karl Tee's
Whack T-shirt Factory (abbreviated-WTF)
Urinal Gum
Flabbergasted
Brew City Tee's
Cotton Charisma
My Grandma's Basement
Milly's Basement
Thanks for your help!
Any one with tee, tees, t-shirt, shirt, etc in the name will help you in the search engines. Thats your goal! There's a lot of crazy names you can come up with, but if some one searches the web for crazy, funny, cool, etc.................... shirts, tees, t-shirts, etc.
How many of those names do you think will pop up near the top of that list?
Also you should keep those names to yourself too. There are people out there that might like one of those names, buy the domain, and then you will have to settle on one you may not like!
This will give you an idea of what I'm talking about. It's the ebay for domain names.

Pick one and DO IT! Don't ask around b/c someone will jump on your name while you're debating on which one to use.

You're just another manufacturer looking for the easy way out: Somebody else who will buy your products and resell them (on your brand name) to build it up in value so you can eventually cut them out of the equation. Sorry. You have to hire your own sales staff if you really want to build it.
