Thanks!
P.S. Keep in mind the water used in washing and re-washing a handkerchief.
Thanks again!
I think it depends on the type of cloth versus paper napkin, and how the cloth napkin is being washed and dried. I will list them from best to worst for the environment below:
1 (Best) Cloth napkin made from flax or organic napkin, washed in cold water with phosphate-free soap and hang on a line to dry.
2 Cloth napkin made from cotton, washed in cold water with phosphate-free soap and hang on a line to dry.
3 Paper napkin made from 100% recycled fibers.
4 Cloth napkin made from flax or cotton, washed conventionally and dried in a dryer.
5 Conventional paper napkin
It has crocheted lace around the borders.
Mix 1 Tablespoon of Oxiclean in warm water. Soak your handkerchief overnight annd rinse under faucet with luke warm water. If not completely white put it in some lemon juice and water; wring it out and let it dry in the sun.
I want to buy some handkerchiefs - but I'm not sure which is better - linen or cotton?
Its for a guy, and I just want to make sure it is high quality but also practical and washable
Cotton is more absorbant. Linen retains its "crisp" quality through many more washings. If this is for actual brow mopping and nose blowing, go with cotton. If it's more about looking look and/or impressing those who see it, get linen. In short, "Linen for showing, cotton for blowing."

Ladies, when you've been crying or have the sniffles, have you ever been offered a clean handkerchief by a gentleman? I don't mean a tissue, but a proper cotton handkerchief.
If so, did you accept it, were you grateful? Did you know the offerer? Also, did you keep the handkerchief, or launder it and give it back to the gentleman?
My husband gave me his when we were going out when I was upset once and still does give me his hankerchief if I need it.
I did accept it, I was grateful, I didn't have any tissues and needed something, I washed it, ironed it and gave it back.

Americans go on the number of threads per square inch, but to my way of thinking, this is not a good measure as the more threads per inch the thinner the cotton would have to be. If one wanted a handkerchief that is ultra soft but also highly absorbent for (excuse the idea) a bad cold or continuous runny nose, the American way does not appear to judge the qualities looked for. Is there an industry classification that would enable one to specify and buy with confidence over the internet
If you don't like going by thread count (which you have backwards, the higher the thread count the more cotton threading there is per square inch of cotton and the more cotton the thicker the product) you can go by denier, which is the fiber mass of the material used, and most high end shops can tell you the denier of the fabric used.

This one was made by crocheting a lace edge onto cotton/poly fabric. The pattern is from a pattern booklet published in 1944 by American Thread Company, and makes a piece of flat lace. I adapted it for this use by making a foundation round of crocheted single crochets around the hem of my fabric square, and then a round of chain 2, skip 2 single crochets, double crochet in next single crochet. Do three double crochets/chain 2 in each corner. 3rd Row.
