How to keep a mattress/bedding cool in the summer while you sleep?? Foam seems to retain heat.?
The big new bed :)

Anyone think a futon mattress (cotton ) helps Or what??

Hi, Paul.

I like a mattress pad and have been using them for many years.

I would try one before investing in a new mattress.

The pads come in different thickness and you should take in consideration that a regular fitted sheet may no longer fit if the mattress and pad combination are very thick.

There are fitted sheets with deeper "pockets" for the very thick mattresses.

Best wishes for a good night's sleep.

I need an idea on how to keep my futon mattress from slipping?

The futon frame is steel. The mattress is covered in a cotton cover, probably completely typical to all futons. But, I keep it in the upright position and use it as my sofa. For some reason, and it drives me crazy, when someone sits on it the mattress starts slipping down. So, the top of the futon framework becomes visible and looks awful. I try to fluff it up again, but then it slips again.

The seating part (the bottom) is not angled down, in fact, it is angled inward. But still, the mattress slips down and probably eventually wants to make its way to the floor. Drives me nuts, and I can't afford a new one or a sofa. Help?

how about that rubber stuff that you put under carpets?

cleaning a futon mattress?

my futon mattress has picked up a mildew smell. (It did not mildew itself). How can I clean the cotton padding to eliminate the smell, not just the outside. I would prefer to do it myself if possible.

what about some bleach and water? Just lightly wipe it that should get rid of the smell and kill the mildew..

Urine soaked futon mattress!! OMG! Help!?

My sister had tripletts, they are around 11 months of age now. She came for a visit and I got out our new "company" futon for sleeping. We pushed it against walls and added rails to keep the sweeties safe. This futon was purchased new about 3 months ago - warranty just expired. Blah!

I think in all the rush and excitement to get unpacked and visit, our elderly aunt put the girls to bed in just PJs with no diapers. We just assumed they would be ok with her as she is very intelligent and independent. Guess senior moments can hit even the best of intentions! :-)

The next day when the babies got up it was pretty late, nearly 9 a.m. as they were tired from the long traveling day before. They had totally soaked the mattress. The pediatrician says it is not uncommon for little ones around that age to urinate 4 or 5+ times a night. They still have a diet full of liquids at that age.

We scrubbed the spot with towels and followed with Folex, but it had soaked nearly all the way through. You may know that futon mattresses are very thick - the good ones about 6" thick - but are stuffed with cotton. And cotton is very absorbant.

There is a big brownish ring (the mattress is a dark green) where the urine has dried so far that won't budge even with gentle shampoo and lots of rinsing. The mattress smells to high heaven.

Is there any way to clean it thoroughly and is there something akin to Scotchguard that can be sprayed on it (assuming we can really get it cleaned) to prevent it from being so bad in the future? IF the little ones sleep on it with no undies again? :-)

I laugh because the babies are precious. But I cry because we had to save up for a while for that particular futon. We wanted something nice and comfy for guests.

I'll best some of you can give me the answers I am looking for to
1) How to deep clean the mattress. Esp. with home products. And
2) How to protect the mattress for future baby dates.

Thanks so much!
I think the question was not read all the way through. There was no question about potty training babies. And our elderly great aunt did the honors of changing the girls for bed. (Please read that part again as it explains that). It was an impromptu visit and we are miles away from any large stores. We used an old quillt, assuming it would be enough with the addition of diapers and jammies. Of course, we had diapers on hand. Please thoroughly read the question before you give an unnecessary and not thought out at all response.
That comment goes directly to Drip. But can be a plea to all as well. Where ever I go, I am constantly seeing answers to other people by persons who obviously not read the question. Ridiculous. Please do not bother to comment if you are not going to read the question. It is a waste of everyone's time. Thank you!

Not any easy task and I can't swear to the colorfast issue but there are some things that can work on the urine odor. With urine and highly absorbant fabric and stuffing there are basically two options. The first and most commonly recommended is enzyme based cleaners, these are availbale in the diaper section of larger stores, hospital and adult diaper sections of the pharmacy and in the pet aisle. Just look for urine odor remover. The upside of these is that they work well. The downside is that in order to be effective they can take several days and the area must be kept saturated with the product with in the temps specified on the bottle in order for the enzymes to break down the urine.
A second option is an oxyclean powder type cleaner mixed with hot water, once agian the product has to have time to breakdown the urine to remove stain and odor, oxyclean actually remains active for 4-6 hours once activated and works really well for this type of issue, but once again requires saturation to remove the stain and odor.

I have used both methods with success for odor, the oxyclean does a better job of removing both the odor and the stain, drying afterward is an issue, sun will fade the futton fabric (been there, done that) so placement over a forced air vent is helpful. The key to true odor removal is the deep set cleaning of what you can't see.

As to future protection. Several recommendations.
For older 3+ (not yet but later for these sweeties) disposable bed pads, available in several sizes in the pharmacy aisle with the adult diapers work great, they are backed with plastic so if you choose to use them with babies be sure to put them UNDER the fitted sheet to keep them safe from choking. I really like these a lot.
2nd - water proof crib sheets - not fitted - JC Penny has the best supply of these, there really just a thick rubber sheet with a cotton fleck coating, but they don't pose a choaking hazard and can be used on top of the bedsheet.
3rd - waterproof mattress toppers - several types are available, I actually prefer the zip on total covers followed with a standard mattress cover for little ones, makes it easier IME.
Lastly, beach towels are one of the best things going for this type of thing, not so much because they are completely waterproof but because they can be double or triple folded under babes and removed one at a time when soiled and are easier to wash.
I highly recommend multiple layers, then if you have to remove one while little ones are sleeping there will still be one in place.

  • How To Buy Discount Futon Bed

Finally, it’s time for you to buy a new futon mattress. Perhaps your present mattress has been exhibiting signs of deterioration by way of developing bumps and lumps or the seams might be falling apart. Or, you’ve decided to start using your futon more and need a more comfortable mattress to sit and sleep on. Irrespective of the reason, it’s imperative to make a right choice of your new futon mattress. You can start looking for mattress reviews right away. If you happen to buy an improper new mattress, you will continue to feel uncomfortable while sleeping on that.

The size of the futon mattress is important. If it is too small you won’t have enough room for a good sleep; nor will it be comfortable for when it is used as a couch. You get a futon mattress in just three sizes. You can have them in a twin, full and queen size. A twin sized mattress is most suitable for children or teenagers because of their size. A couple that uses futon for sleeping need to have at least a full sized mattress. As is evident from its name, a queen sized mattress has the largest size and offers room to accommodate two people most comfortably.
