I recently brought a hamster, since searching the internet for info, I have discovered that some hamsters have died from ingesting the "fluffy bedding" is it safe to carry on using the bedding, or should I take it out immediately?
PLEASE HELP!
I don’t want to lose my first pet!
I never bought the fluffy bedding for my hamster or mice. I've also read that it isn't safe. Also another poster said that she gave it to her mice and it was coming out the other end in strings. So that doesn't sound good for them. I would just give mine some toilet paper or paper towel when I cleaned their cages. Then they would shred it up to make a nice nest with no problems. As an everyday ground cover for the cage use either Aspen or Carefresh origional bedding.

we want to know the reason and the quantum difference.
It is in the preparation that the differences are introduced.
You are looking for things which will affect the concentration of the dye, or the dye's ability to penetrate the cotton.
So less dye in the mixture, more cotton, more water and less time in the dye will all reduce the depth of shade.
The water temperature and the mordant used (or not used) will both affect how much the cotton fibers "open up" to allow the dye to get trapped in them.
Other things that will slow the cotton taking up the dye would be if the cotton was contaminated, say with oils for example. Also the thread having a high twist, or tightly woven (if it is cloth) will stop the dye being taken up very well.
The difference in shade depth can be massive. An oily, densely-woven cloth dipped in cold dye at low concentration with no mordant for only a short time, will not appear to have taken up any dye at all.
If loosly-woven cloth is put in concentrated dye at a warm temperature with the recommended amount of mordant and left for several hours, then take-up would be 100% or even possibly greater than that, where it would appear darker than it should. This excess dye should come out again when it is washed.
I hope this helps?

I really do not want to buy chemicals or equipment, just to use an old saucepan and experiment with small quantities but I cannot find instructions that give enough detail. How to 'fix" colors. Dont mind about colors just want some subtle pastels mainly. To make for variety as there are not many available here commercially and I only want small amounts.
You can use onion skins, all kinds of vegetation, various types of bark, black walnut husks. But much of the time your colours will not be "fast" -- that is, they will fade with washing or exposure to sunlight unless you use a mordant. Mordants are metals -- copper, aluminum, iron. Sometimes you can get enough of a mordant using a copper/iron/aluminum pan.
Check here http://www.pioneerthinking.com/naturaldy es.html for some idea about what colours you can get. Also here http://www.joyofhandspinning.com/natural -dyes.shtml for some info about mordants.
Exocarp , Mesocarp and Endocarp are the division of fruit wall of a DRUPE type of fruit such as Coconut ( Fibrous drupe and Mango ( Fleshy drupe ).
COTTON fruit is a Capsule that breaks open to expose the seeds .
So the words Exocarp , Mesocarp and Endocarp are redundant here !!!!!
The cotton fibres are the outgrowths on the seed coat or testa .

Characteristics of Cotton Fibre that needed for cotton spinning
2. Maturity: The maturity of cotton fibre defines in terms of the development of the cell wall. A fully mature fibre has a developed cell wall. On the other hand, an immature fibre has a very thin cell wall. A fibre is to be considered as mature fibre when the cell wall of moisture swollen fibre represents 50% to 80% of the round cross section, as immature fibre represents 30% to 45% and as dead when it represents less than 25%. 3. Fibre Length: The average length of spinnable fibre is called staple length. Staple length is one of the most important fibre characteristics. The quality, count, strength, etc depend on the staple length of the fibre. Higher the staple length, higher...
