I have thought using that too. But apparently the string used for candles are treated somehow so they burn slowly and I was told to only use candle wicking and nothing else.

i have a pattern for a lacy dress for a toddler that says:
100% mercerised cotton thread, 3-400Yd.balls
does it mean size 3 or 3 balls --if so, what size thread?
the frock looks lacy and fine
When in doubt, buy more than you need and keep the receipt.
That's what I typically end up doing.
When a project calls for mercerized cotton, you can substitute baby yarn and just use a smaller hook. The project will work as long as you check your gauge and stick to it.
(I read your pattern as meaning 3 balls of 400 yd. thread.)

I have been searching for crochet books that contain patterns for baby bonnets and booties using 10, 20, or 30 size cotton thread. I haven't had any luck. Can anyone suggest anything? Thank you! =)
This site has some adorable booties, but no patterns available. I would love to have patterns similar.

I'm fairly sure it's Annie's Attic who has a leaflet of heirloom booties that are made with cotton thread....sorry, I can't find my copy, but if you go to their site and search or contact them, they may be able to help you out.
I crochet baskets and other items from cotton thread and, when done, I starch them with a 1:1 sugar and water mixture which is boiled to dissolve the sugar then cooled and the item dipped in it.
I have made something for my grandson from acrylic knitting worsted and would like it to retain its shape but I don't know if I can use the same starching method to accomplish this.
Anybody know?
Thanks,
Deana
The glue you would use is the kind that is white when still wet and dries clear and waterproof.
Often sold as wood glue.
It can be used as thin as one part glue in ten part water for a little stiffening, or nearly glue only for heavy duty work, but I would test it in a 1 glue in 5 water solution.
Make sure you test a little of the yarn in the glue, as the different man-made fibers react different on different glues.
