not so many now days.
synthetic materials cheaper to produce & also makes thenig more wrinkle resistant
really need to check labels

Hi i will be washing my clothes ONCE on a two week study trip.

The clothes I want to bring are new, mostly 100% cotton, and most importantly, hanging them to dry after wash is not an option. (i will not be doing the washing personally and they will be transferred directly to the dryer after machine wash)

I still have roughly 2 weeks to figure out a way to PREVENT MY CLOTHES FROM SHRINKING.

help please?

I suggest that you wash your clothes yourself while you're in the shower. Take a couple of items with you and wet them down then use a bar of ivory soap to clean them then rinse the soap away. Fold and roll the clothes to get as much water out as possible and then hang the clothes to dry in the shower (unless you're sharing the bathroom) or in your room.

Most cotton clothing has been preshrunk so be sure that you check your labels to make sure that you're not worrying over nothing. I'd use the above method for items that I was really worried about but otherwise your clothes will probably be fine.

I have a hard time finding polyester/cotton clothes, so my only option is the 100% cotton stuff. The thing is that after throwing it in the washer and dryer the 100% cotton clothes come out looking like they've been worn for years!

what can I do for the clothes to retain their colors and look like new?

try putting a cup of vinegar in with a full load...it will make the clothes softer and the colors won't run...and oh yeah, make sure you wash it on cold

I would like to know if boiling cotton clothes would get them clean. I know it would kill any germs, but would it also clean them, if I didn't use any soap or detergent?
I'm extremely sensitive to detergents and I wanted to see if I could get them clean without, and without using a washing machine that has detergents in it.

First, according to the Federal Health Code, water that reaches 190 degrees will sanitize anything. Water boils at 190, so yes; you can kill the bacteria by boiling your clothing.

Second, I have extremely sensitive skin, I broke out from Tide Free, Cheer Free and Gain Free, etc..... All the "Free" detergents are is Free of Perfumes. Most Proctor and Gamble, Johnson & Johnson and other major manufactures of laundry detergent contains fillers, perfumes, water, ammonium and formaldehyde (embalming fluid).

After sleeping in a hotel bed, or bed other than mine, I would be covered in red splotches. How embarrassing.

I washed my clothing in Baking Soda for years and had, dry starchy feeling clothing.

Then I found Melaleuca, the Wellness Company. The sell all natural house hold cleaners and more. I was so desperate to try anything at this point in time. I tried their MelaPower Laundry Detergent. No itches, no burning, no red blotches! I had found salivation. Then I was brave and tired their fabric softener, MelaSoft. Still no irritants!

I was washing with out soap on my body in the shower and shampoo burned my scalp. Their Herbal Shampoo is the best and the Platinum Bar is excellent. I am finally able to use lotion, wash with a soap bar and shampoo my hair with out by scalp burning.

OK, so i have this Esprit top that I absolutely adore ^-^ It's really soft and I think it's made of 100% cotton and I've always hand washed it but earlier it accidentally got included in the washing machine.. it looks fine but it's still wet.. anyway is it really bad for cotton clothes to be machine washed? will it really ruin the cotton?

I think it best you tick to the hand wash

but if your in a hurry and don't have that much time put it in the wash machine on delicate cycle. I have Kenmore more wash machine at my house and I never had a problem with that cycle.

I also don't recommend regular bleach on whites that often since it will cause a few holes here & there. Also make sure to use regular bleach on whites only. If you prefer to use color safe bleach on colors that is your choice. I use and I have no problem with it. It removes dirt and oil base stains, some food stains. Others you will need to try Spray & Wash. Which I like the best for removing stains. I also have bottle of Shout but I am dispointed with the results after muti-uses. I use think it was the best when I bought the spray & wash for 2.00 at walmart. I said I will give this a try and usually end up with dam period stain every month. This remove the blood stain.
