Cotton Cardigan

I just bought this black cropped 100% cotton cardigan. Only problem - I forgot to read the care instructions - and when I got home I only just noticed the "dry clean only" label. I read that it is possible to handwash it with cold water or dump it into the washing machine at home. But can normal laundry washing powder be used? Or should I use something milder? Do I have to add anything to soften it if it turns out scratchy after washing? Just want to clarify things before I actually wash it. I don't want to ruin it!
I'm living in Singapore, so I haven't really heard what's Woolite (I suppose it's some clothes detergent), there's no Target here, and the supermarkets usually only contain the basic stuff.

I think that the biggest risk for your garment is shrinkage. Use liquid detergent, and avoid the spinning in the washer. If you flat dry it is probably best.

I got a cotton cardigan and it is too big so if anybody has any idea of how i could shrink it so it is a tight fit, i would be very great fulll. Thankyou!

It depends on if its preshrunk cotton or not. If you look at the label it will say if it is, if it doesn't say 100% preshrunk cotton it most likely is NOT. To shrink it put it in the dryer, after you wash it, on medium or high.

This will be tough. Polyester is hard to shrink. Over-drying in a very hot dryer will be about the only way. Unless its sloppy big, dont worry about it. A good comfy oversized sweater is nice.

I saw a cool plaid one here...I know you said plain red...but when I think Rockabilly or Punk, I think Plaid...there are plain red cardigans on this link too.

I bought this cardigan from heritage that's too long on me. The directions for washing it says: machine wash cold, only non- chlorine, lay flat to dry.
Your advice is much appreciated. :)

wash it in hot water, dry it in hi heat
