is 50/50 polyester/cotton broadcloth acceptable for use in a quilt?
Kona Cotton Teal Blue

Sure, just wash it ahead of time using the same method that you intend to wash the quilt when it's dirty; and use polyester thread. I've made dozens of quilts out of peoples' clothes, and you can use whatever you want if you try to make all things equal. Broadcloth has kind of a loose weave, so you may want to use an interfacing. Use sew-in if you plan to dry the finished quilt in a dryer, and wash & dry the interfacing before you use it, if you use sew-in.

What is broadcloth ? is that like a polished cotton? Thanks?

Thank you for your time...

Broadcloth properly means cloth made on a wider loom than the usual handlooms, so there is wool broadcloth, cotton broadcloth, silk broadcloth, etc.

Usually when something like a shirt specifies "broadcloth", they're talking about a plain ("tabby") weave cotton or cotton blend, usually about the weight of muslin, not very closely woven. As opposed to cotton shirting -- good shirting is fairly closely woven, high twist cotton.

What is the best stabilizer for machine embroidering broadcloth?
Kinde / Nook / Reader Padded Zipper Pouch

I just machine embroidered a baby and took it off the hoop and there are puckers around the fabric. I don't know if the stabilizer material is not strong enough or what. I am making pillows and the broadcloth is going to be sewd onto a nice cotton fabric but I don't want the broadcloth to have puckers all around it or be too stiff.
I am using tear away. Thanks so much for all your suggestions, I will try them tonight!

Sometimes it is the design that is too dense or has been digitized with stitching that is too short. You can enlarge the design (just a bit) - there should be this option on the machine and this may help.

Other options:

Pre wash and dry the fabric you are going to embroider.

Determine the direction of the straight of grain (less stretch).

Use starch to make the fabric more stable.

Hoop so the straight of grain is in alignment with the indicators on the hoop.

Use a basting stitch around the perimeter of the design.

If the fabric is still puckering, use two sheets of the tear -away, at right angles to each other. Don't know why, but is often recommend to do this.

Always test the design and stabilizer on like fabric before doing any project. Takes time, but is less frustrating in the long run.

What is the difference between 80's, 100's, 140's, and 180's dress shirts?
Kinde / Nook / Reader Padded Zipper Pouch

Recently I've been interested in learning what the difference was in men's dress shirts regarding those numbers. I noticed that some shirts were 100's and some shirts were 80's or 140's or 180's. I couldn't find any answers online and wondered why the 180's seemed to be the most expensive ones (other than the obvious fact that they had a higher number attached to them).

Also, they were advertised as either cotton, linen, polyester, broadcloth, poplin, or pinpoint. What's the difference between broadcloth, poplin, and pinpoint? Thanks!

It has to do with the thread count per inch. The more threads per inch, both vertical and horizontal, the higher the quality and softer the fabric. It works similar with bedsheets with the higher numbers being 300, 400 and up.

  • Shower Curtain - Toile - Christine Sews

Shower curtains are a great home decor opportunity - you get to bring a pattern into the bathroom. Make sure that all edges and hems are deep enough.  Bathrooms get steamy.  And edges will curl if the hems are too narrow; even if you are not using your curtain directly in front of the shower. Don’t forget the interfacing.  Use an additional piece of cotton broadcloth to reinforce your top hem, if you dislike the fusible adhesive. This project is simple.  But because it is simple, sloppiness will really show.  Carefully cut and press.

Just in case you were wondering, I am married.  And my husband owns shoes.  Right.  That was the only way I could get that much of the shower curtain into the photo.
