Well, are you talking about the puff of cotton as it grows on the plant, or the wad of cotton one might use to remove makeup? The cotton that grows on the plant is a cotton boll - hence the "boll weevil." The one you use to polish silver is a cotton ball.

Effingham 4-H'ers are going strong
Effingham County 4-H is gearing up for its annual fundraiser Sunday at Effingham County High School during the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce's Holiday Classic.
County Administrator David Crawley, Superintendant of Schools Randy Shearouse and other community leaders, including Jerry Smith, Michael Moore and County Extension Agent Bill Tyson will be on hand to serve the meal while 4-H'ers bus tables and serve tea from noon to 2:30 p.m.
The fundraiser supports scholarship programs for competitive 4-H events, leadership conferences and incentive programs.
Student members
Effingham 4-H is going strong this year. Students recently elected new Junior and Senior 4-H Board Members.
