This lace was purchased in Belgium about the turn of the last century by my grandfather. My grandmother used the lace for this christening dress for my mother. Each member of the family (about 20) have all been christened in this gown. Now it is very dingy and has yellow stains on the bodice and on the cotton batiste bodice. I've soaked both pieces in hot lemon water and now need to wash it "in the usual way"! Because of the delicate nature, I'm not sure whether to use Dreft or if there is something else which may be safer. I really need help soon! This is for the greatgrandchild of my mother - the original person to be christened in it. Please hurry!
Hi,
Please do not wash your gown. My daughter did that to my chistening gown and ruined it. It just shredded it. My advice is to take it to a professional who restores fine lace, and satin items. This maybe a little expensive, but at least you will have a restored gown that you can continue to charish.

fabric is swiss batiste and I need to create long term storage that is safe for this delicate fabric
First be sure that it is very clean and well rinsed of all residue, no starch or any other treatment that could attract insects or deteriorate the fabric. Any substance left on the fabric now could turn spots dark in time even if it is not noticeable now.
Make sure it is completely dry. Use acid free tissue paper to fill out the sleeves and skirts to avoid having any folding creases that can harm the fibers. The best packaging would be a container that would allow the fabric to breathe (not plastic)while still keeping out feeding or nesting insects. Pack each garment in a separate box carefully in layers of acid free tissue avoiding creasing the fabric as much as possible. If it is a particularly valuable item, it can be taken to a quality dry cleaner who offers a "heirlooming" service where they can do this for you.

kbenco's projects: Laura Ashley McCall's 5039 frock #3
We hunted through the stash, and she came up with some embroidered poly chiffon that she had picked, aged 6, for a flowergirl dress to wear to my brother's wedding. (My SIL vetoed it, so it has been lurking for a while, poly chiffon not being our usual style). Daughter the first obviously still likes this fabric. I asked her what appealed, still thinking about why we love fabric, and she thinks it is the sheerness and the embroidery. I thought it might be a bit twee, and reminiscent of 6 year olds for a mocktail dress. However, as it still appealed, I made it up in the Laura Ashley McCalls 5039 with an imperial batiste underlining/underlay. We added a cotton voile green sash at the empire waist...
