    — John Wilde has a lot to smile about this harvest season.

    His cotton fields at the Wilde Farms, just off southeastern Loop 306, are brimming with full laden bolls. The cotton strippers and pickers seemed to just barely crawl in their march across the sea of white. With baskets full, the strippers hustle to the module builders to unload their white gold.

    These fields are no ordinary fields.

    “We voluntarily work with the states’ extension agent and the Integrated Pest Control Management program to plant fields to test cotton varieties under controlled circumstances,” Wilde said. “These fields are underground drip irrigated, which allows precise delivery of water, nutrients and pesticides. We plant 16 rows of each variety to test and harvest four of those rows to use for the testing and grading process.” The test fields make up 500 acres.
