knitting: substituting yarn?
Week 23

is it ok to substitute a yarn with a different yarn weight? in the pattern, super bulky yarn was supposed to be used but i think it looks too huge and besides i cant find any in my local yarn shops! i know the size would come out way smaller but im fine with that ..(in fact i DO want it much smaller) are there any other risks involved? should i or should i not?

also another question: for 1 project, can u use acrylic yarn but then change to cotton yarn for a small part? the colours complement so well but i dunno if it would be wise to change material of the yarn.. thanks!

While you can use a lighter weight yarn, if you use the same needles as called for you'll end up with something far more open or holey than you expect. As for changing needle sizes, too, while your project should come out smaller, it may also come out as out of proportion and look odd. Sounds strange, but patterns are written for a specific yarn (ever wonder why patterns call for so and so's yarn specifically? This is why.) on a specific size (or close to it) and a specific gauge. You could use two strands of bulky or chunky weight yarn, btw, to equal the super bulky.

As for changing fiber content, no, don't do it. This also means a change in how the fibers act and may cause puckering or other problems. Stick with one or the other, but mixing fiber contents often results in disappointment.

Cai Guo-Qiang is known internationally as a "fireworks artist," but even though gunpowder is his signature medium, his repertoire includes more than blinding flashes and concussive bangs.

Cai also uses gunpowder to make images on fabric and paper that are more durable than the momentary dazzle of "explosion projects" such as the huge flaming flower that he touched off at sunset on the east terrace of the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Dec. 11.

Like the displays Cai created for the opening of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but on a far smaller scale, the flower was a transient phenomenon - it lasted only one minute.

It lives on, however, in a high-definition video that's

Recycling Yarn Not the Treasure Hunt I Hoped

Ell, I made a trip to our local Savers Thrift Department store to look for decent wool sweaters from which to recycle the yarn. I thought this would be a great, economical way to obtain several skeins worth of yarn for just about $6. In general, I do believe recycling yarn can be a worthwhile endeavor, but I don’t think it’s for me. The reality of the hunt is not worth the result, which today resulted in more awareness than wool.

First thing I did was examine the 20 feet of men’s sweaters. Feeling along the edges of them for something that might be wool, as well as looking for sweaters that are mostly a solid color I discovered a few things about the sweater search that I don’t care for.
