i tried hairspray, it didn't work, it's black ink, the shirt is cotton and cherry red. thanks for answering in advance.
Hairspray isn't strong enough. Use some 91%isopropyl alcohol(next to rubbing alcohol) Don't use rubbing alcohol because it contains oil.

the shirt is black cotton and the ink is blue, the pen went into the washing machine by mistake of course.
I normally use VANISH on stains and it seems to work for me.
TESCO does a selection of specific stain removers which have proved to work for me, but they are not cheap, but if your shirt is worth a rescue?
I have just had a thought - If however you live anywhere other then England, none of this would help would it. (whoops?)

I stupidly did a load of laundry with a blue pen in my jeans and now I have several shirts with blue ink stains and spots, mostly cotton Polos and shirts. Is there any way of getting these out now that they have gone through the dryer?
I'm amazed how well Oxi-Clean works! It even got most of the stain out for me when I dried it in the dryer before noticing the stain, applying Oxi Clean and leaving it sit for 15 min. before washing it again! It looked great!

I seriously messed up. I was so tired I put the shirt in the washing machine without checking the breast pocket first.
The pen came apart and has stained the inside of the pocket with black ballpoint pen ink. It's peeking out a bit, so I need to get it out. The shirt is a light blue denim-y type of fabric.
I did not put it in the dryer; right now it's soaking in cold water, tide and baking soda. It's not helping. Your suggestions please!
Give this a try- I pulled it from a Scott Common Sense article on getting rid of stains:
Pen Ink: Whether it's a misdirected pen mark or a full-fledged pen explosion, fate would have it that ballpoint ink stains will end up on your favorite shirt or pants. But they can be removed with some persistence. Try these tips: Blot the stain with cool water to remove as much ink as possible and allow the spot to dry. Place the stained item on a pad of paper towels and wet the backside with hairspray. Blot the fabric to further remove as much ink as possible. Finally, apply laundry pretreatment and wash in warm water. Let the item air dry to avoid setting the ink in the dryer, should any stain remain. If you're left with only traces of a stain, consider using bleach applied with a Q-Tip and rewashing.

My wife was issued with a new dust coat at her work. This morning she placed a pen in the top pocket and it had leaked, ending up with a big ink stain on her white uniform.
Any suggestions for the best way to remove the stain without taking any colour from the company logo which is sewn on the pocket.
Plain rubbing alcohol will take the ink out then just rinse and wash as usual.

We made a lot of things ourselves to save money, but also so we could do everything exactly as we wanted. We screenprinted paper to look like cross-sections of cut logs for name tags, and wrote on them guests' names and how we knew them. We worked within what we had and what we know how to do. Since we can print, we did that. I didn't care about shoes very much, so I wore some old ones. Flowers weren't a big deal either, so we saved a ton of money on those (though I think they looked lovely). We tried to purchase everything from friends and local vendors.
