I'm looking to find tank tops and short sleeve tops for women in various colors that are not made of cotton. I wanted to buy some shirts made out of polyester or a similar material. All the places I looked at only had cotton. I'm going to be doing my own screen printing on these shirts.

As long as you're not looking for mass quantities to be done (which I would assume you are not a screen printing business..) I would check out target.com They have a pretty big variety of clothing and this way, you can shop around for a good deal and buy multiples of the same item, but you also most likely have a Target store around where you live so you can return it to the store if you are not happy with the product once you get it rather than buy somewhere else and have to pay the shipping costs to mail them back if they don't fit or if they aren't what you expected.
Another good tip is to go to yahoo.com and search for "target.com coupon code" -- keep it in the quotation marks- and you can probably find a website that has a coupon code to use with the order when you are ready to check out online at target.com. The coupon code may be for 15% off or free shipping on purchase of 50$ of more, or shipping on an unlimited number of items for a set price- like 5$ when it normally may cost 12$, or sometimes you get lucky and find a promo code for mabe let's say 10% your total order and free shipping. You just have to check these coupon websites and check often- they are always changing.

Since you've never been in business before, I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. You have to determine whether you'll start a web based business or one with a store front. I'd call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE.

The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting a T-shirt business and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you'll concentrate on (your market ) and how you'll go after them.

You'll need to register the business with your state controller's office and make sure that you have any city and county licenses if any are needed where you live. All of this will come out in a business plan.
